Start AT Kearney job before Cornell MBA? (Consulting post-MBA goal)
Been in consulting at family manufacturing biz 3-4 years. Offer for AT Kearney Analyst (fresh grad position) right now in Asia but starting MBA in 3 months at Cornell Johnson. Hoping to get an Associate role in AT Kearney post-MBA in New York. Will working for 2-3 months pre-MBA help my case or look bad & hurt my chances after MBA?
talisagaye, hey, look at the bright side, at least you didn't get a ton of monkey shit thrown at you...here is my best guess on threads that might be helpful:
Hope that helps.
It will hurt your chances. Spending 2-3 months at a firm and then leaving for b-school, won't look good for your chances of returning. It may even prevent you from returning to the firm post-MBA.
I suggest you approach the firm & say you just got this great b-school option and want to keep in touch throughout your b-school time. Build a bridge for a post-mba job.
Thanks for your reply! I am actually based in SG and want to move to NYC, hence the b-school. So making connections here wouldnt make very much sense... how much does networking help anw?
Or approach Cornell and ask if they can defer you by a year. Be very open as to why - that you have an offer with AT Kearney and are hoping to build out your resume before business school. That consulting experience will be gold when you're job hunting in business school. It will open a very wide range of options for you. It will also allow you to reapply if you want to leverage up for a higher ranked business program.
You'll also learn an enormous amount, which will benefit you in business school and beyond. ATK is a strong exit for most Cornell students; I wouldn't just assume you'll have similar opportunities post business school
Bear in mind that ATK can pull your offer, Cornell likely won't, they would just say no. So if you're indifferent, ask Cornell first.
Thanks! May I ask how Johnson is viewed in the eyes of consulting employers in the US? I know it is not as high as MBA business schools">M7 but Johnson students assured me that they are still competitive. I am just worried bc I dont have 'big brand' name firms on my CV.
talisagaye - If you position with AT Kearney that this is a 'pre-MBA internship' you could set yourself up for success. Many firms hire folks for a 3-6 month trial period before starting business school knowing that they will not be staying long term.
Having spent 10 years on adcom at a top 15 MBA program, I know that it is unlikely that Cornell will offer a deferral. They would likely encourage you to reapply next year but won't promise that you would be accepted again.
You need to be forthcoming with AT Kearney and let them know that you are planning to start an MBA in August/September and would love to work with them for a few months.
Good luck!
Thanks for the advice. I am not sure if AT Kearney will be willing to do so.. I am in the Singapore office now.
For what reasons will Cornell consider letting me defer? Assuming that they accepted me for Round 4 (when its widely known to be super competitive), is it safe to assume that I will ahve at least 90% chance of next admission if I keep in contact w them? Also, one year of consulting will look even better on my resume to them right?
