Stuff you wish you got for NYC
Currently a senior graduating this spring with a full-time IB role in New York. In addition, Christmas is coming up, and I have literally no idea what I should ask for since college-Esque stuff won't last long, and I don't want to have them buy stuff that I won't wear once I get there. So people who are postgrad in any city but specifically NYC, do you have any recommendations of stuff to ask for?
Ps. Sorry if asking for Christmas gift ideas is douche, but I honestly have no idea what to get.
A yellow gold, alligator skin Patek Phillipe Calatrava.
My fav is the discontinued 5110J. Guilloche dial, world time, gorgeous micro rotor, classic dress size - it's perfect. Second choice would be 5227J. Cream/ivory/off-white dial, applied indices, half-hunter caseback - very elegant.
black or brown strap?
Probably brown. I like blue suits and brown shoes.
Patek Nautilus Ref. 5711/1A - also the sexiest watch every made.
Congrats on the full-time role! Here are some ideas that could be helpful (they were at least for me):
- Gift Cards: This one is a good idea since it gives you the option to go out and buy stuff that you need when the time comes. It's really hard to plan out everything you'll need before moving so it helps to have a gift card that you can use whenever. Remember to ask for gift cards to stores that sell different things (example: Amazon) or any place where you normally shop at.
- Clothes: Assuming you'll be in-person at your firm - formal/work clothes are needed. Also recommend purchasing a good jacket for the winter season here in NYC (it gets cold).
- Laptop Bag/Backpack: A nice leather bag for your laptop or work things goes a long way since you'll probably be taking the subway or walking to work (unless your firm covers Ubers).
- Coffee Machine/Electric Kettle/Cookware: Highly recommend this unless you plan on ordering food every time. Also nice to be able to make coffee at home and it saves you from waiting in line/spending 6 dollars on coffee each morning.
Yeah assuming you're not loaded and coming with a ton of financial backing for your apt or furnishing said apt, I'd ask for cash for the security deposit / funds for getting basics like couch/mattress/desk etc. I wish I did the same before I moved to the city but being the first person to move to NY out of my family/friends circle, it was pretty unknown that I'd sink an unreal amount of money into that stuff, even with cheap rent and furniture.
I am all for asking about Christmas gift ideas. I need more ideas myself. Good post imo.
Washer dryer in unit
This. I've been apt hunting and it's wild to me how many places don't even have washer/dryer in the building while charging 4k+ for rent
Most buildings are old and there’s a greater risk of flooding with in-unit washers. Landlords also usually cover gas and don’t want to have to pay for your dryer
