Successful FIG PE Investments

I know FIG is a broad term, so for the purpose of this discussion, i am looking to learn / hear of case studies or examples relating to pe style investing (majority buyout) in banks, insurance companies and maybe speciality finance. How are these deals structured? What are the value creation levers that you usually see? What are the key diligence issues that one investigates?
Thanks
