Hah, no man go to Capitola...no one surfs at the beach boardwalk. Capitola is just a little further down highway 1, theres a few places where tons of surfer go and plenty of surf shops give lessons

Surfings tough as shit at first... Doing my internship this summer in San Diego at a regional bank/brokerage... I try to get out as much as possible because it IS fun as hell... Good to see other surfers on here

Yeah, I expect to get dumped quite a bit :-)

Palo... is there a specific surf shop in Capitola that you could recommend? Also, is it possible to rent a wet suit at most places or should I just buy one?

How freakin' cold are the waters in Santa Cruz?

I have surfed in SC for 10 years. Don't go to Capitola...great waves, but not the best place to learn. Start at Cowell's, which is across the pier from the boardwalk. There is a surf shop, nicely named "cowells surf shop" right next to it where you can rent boards and lessons. The waves are rollers, you can stand for about a mile and there will be tons of beginners with fat foam boards out there. When you get a little better, head out to pleasure point...maybe check out the hook or 38th street or maybe 26. All good spots in Capitola. When you get really good, head out to natural bridges or steamers.

Good luck and watch out for the men in grey suits

Funny :-)

Ok, so I can say I tried surfing. Check. It was a lot tougher than I imagined. I don't even know what we were thinking! Although a very humbling experience, I laughed my ass off attempting to even look like I remotely knew what I was doing.

What is the best place to surf down here by San Diego? Ive been going to La Jolla all summer, but is there a better spot? I heard PB is a good place, but I want to make sure its not too crowded... I have 4 weeks left down here then its back to the mid-west, so I want to make the best of it. Damn Im glad I came to Cali and tried surfing. Made my internship all the better, even with my extreme fear of sharks (aka nature's murderer)

In san diego, la jolla shores is nice...but small. Try Blacks a little up the coast. Gets much bigger. Don't worry about sharks in SD or LA, the red triangle ends around salinas. In SC, its a different story, but also very little reason to worry.

To pepsi, keep at it...it only gets better and one day it clicks and you will be hooked...(or stoked?)

Enjoy

Yeah, what's up with that word stoked? Everyone overly uses the word in CA.

I was pretty stoked seeing you mention this.

So where is the best Californian beach to surf and also get eaten by a great white shark? Pretty well all of them, right?

No, I think SoCal is safe enough. Certainly more than South Africa.
