Target Universities and Courses?

My school has currently predicted me A(Economics)A(Sociology)B(Maths) with the chance of me moving up to A*(Economics)A(Sociology)B(Maths) in November, gonna try to push maths to an A. Regardless, I don't meet the requirements to study economics at the top target unis such as LSE, Warwick, UCL. This has led me to a few options and was hoping for some advice.

  1. Gap Year and apply to a target for Economics

  2. Proceed to go to a semi target if possible (may not be in economics but related to finance)

  3. Try going to a target uni for a course not related to finance such as cyber security or geography etc.

  4. Study Economics at a non target London uni such as QMUL, I've heard some people get into IB even though it's not target.

Additionally, do employers look at BSc>BA. What would be the best semi-targets?

Would appreciate any help, thanks.

Course is irrelevant, some people find they can leverage non standard degrees in interviews and why banking questions. I’d say stick with something numerical though, STEM/econ etc. University name>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>degree name. Go to a target. Take a gap year if you have to.

The only course ive seen so far in a target is Cyber Security at Warwick, unfortunately it only has about one module related to maths. I also checked linkedin for any possible analysts with a degree in Cyber Security, did not find any.

cyber security is an extremely niche degree, the career path for the variety of people studying it is largely pre-determined. Study what you want to study.

1. Not the best time in the world to take a gap year but you could bank on travel being better next year.

2. Very doable.

3. Course choice is pretty much irrelevant at targets.

4. Why would you study at a non-target if you don't have to? If you're thinking that the unis physical location in London means something, it doesn't. Sure some people get in from non-targets but why would you purposefully make life exponentially harder for yourself?

I don't think employers give a shit about whether its BA or BSc

Semi-target ordering is mostly just splitting hairs but roughly: Durham > Bristol, Nottingham > Everything Else.

Edit: Re no.1, just realised your gap year would probably be 2022/23. Should be fine then.

Thank you for the help. The only course ive seen so far in a target is Cyber Security at Warwick, but Im not sure if its worth the risk of applying there since I have no work experience or knowledge on it to develop a Personal Statment. Contemplating Durham Accounting and Finance, I thought location mattered but if thats not the case then it seems like a good option. How would internships and such work, would I have to travel to London or would it be cities closer by. Thanks.

Dude don't do a whole degree in something you're not interested in just to go to a target. You WILL fail and/or want to drop out. I cannot stress this enough.

Durham A+F is fine.

During internships, you would move to London lol (unless there's another pandemic)... They happen over the summer. You're not going to be at uni.

I got into Nottingham with worse grades than you and it’s a great semi target. It’s very doable to get into a solid BB at a semi target.

So ye just apply to semi targets if you have the grades and then enroll.
