They want my deposit money! Georgetown MBA vs. Columbia Business School Msc

Ok, I am poor and ill informed and desperate.

I have admits to a Columbia Business School Msc program and also to Georgetown's MBA.

Which one would be better overall perception to finance employers in NYC and Asia.

And which one would be best chance for NYC buy side firm?

I need to pay deposit for these programs very soon and I can't make up my mind.

Ivy league, NYC setting vs traditional MBA.

You need to consider which program will have the best reputation back in China (I am making an assumption here). I would think that Columbia is the more respected band. This is important because there is a real chance you will not be able to find a job because of Visa issues.

IMO - Columbia is the one to pick.

1) Georgetown is a very good MBA, but not a top program. I love DC, but you'll be spending a lot of time on Amtrak or Bolt Bus to get to NYC.

2) If your goal is NYC, be in NYC. Columbia is a phenomenal brand, although their MSc programs tend to be international student honeypots. You'll be in NYC for networking and internships, something that is a lot more difficult all there way down in DC.

On a side note, I think culturally, NYC would be the better fit. DC has a transient culture and is obviously politically focused. NYC is more welcoming of internationals and from just a enjoying life perspective, I think NYC will be better for you.

Thank you @ TNA. I'm from HK so close guess and have an internship there. Actually I have family in NYC. But this is MS degree and the other is MBA degree. Good advice. But would you give the same advice to local trying for a equity research role or would you suggest Georgetown?

Even for local would you suggest Columbia MS? Or for locals you would suggest MBA Georgetown?

For me yes the Visa would be very hard.

Yes I agree. In HK it's Columbia for sure. I see your point about locals and internationals etc.

Think of it like this.

Columbia MBA > Columbia MSc

Columbia MSc > Georgetown MBA

You have family in NYC which will be important. You need that social safety net when you are looking for work. You'll find plenty of people who you have a connection with in NYC. Not so much in DC.

If you were an American, my advice would be this. If you have some relevant work experience and a decent network, Columbia would be the best fit. Georgetown is a good MBA program and I am not taking anything away from them, but as you move down the ranking curve, OCR gets weaker and it just gets harder to break in. The MBA would only place you as an associate if you had prior work experience as well.

i think you should go to Georgetown MBA. schools ranked 15 to 25 have similar outcomes but are more regional. so yes you may be placed in DC but job outcomes/salary are roughly the same. also, mba programs do send people to NY if that is your end goal but it takes more effort on your end. i am heading to UT Austin MBA and they send a good amount to NY even though we have Houston right next door.

i think you are taking a big chance with Columbia MSC because it really all depends on how you do on your own. there is no set path like the MBA program has in terms of recruiting events, treks, and alumni networks. of course if you got into a better MBA program i would suggest that. or if you have time and reapply next year to a top 15 MBA program that is even better.

UT Austin is better but not by much. like i said, schools ranked 15 to 25 are regional. so UT Austin would be better for Texas overall but not good for Mid-Atlantic or East Coast. There are people who would choose Georgetown because they want to be placed in DC area or have family on the East Coast.

@TNA @whattherock" Fucking A guys - by the way an MBA is a masters degree... You are both wrong on some topics and right on some others. Both take a chill pill.

Business MSc outside of MBAs used to be quasi non-existent in the US pre Lehman, it was a largely European thing. Except the US caught on to it as a way to make $$$. That's how we started getting tons of them in the US. Going to Colombia for the MSc in Real Estate is incredible, as it's an older program and very well respected.

Going to a new make a shit load of money for Columbia MSc is pretty fucking dumb - unless you are going to use the name back in Kazakhstan were people don't know the difference between the undergrad and that MSc program. I would opt for taking a couple of degree certification from Harvard for $1k and use that on your CV instead, a lot cheaper if that's your end goal.

The Ivy league debate is ridiculous. the MASTERS in business administration was invented at Wharton, an Ivy league school... Harvard is a top MBA and no one seems to be looking down on them at Harvard...

I was going to write some more, but I just experienced verbal diarrhoea re-reading this thread. Either way you are going to spend a shit load of money for a sub-par program and even more money living in a box in NY. I would not recommend it. Work a bit longer in HK, get a better GMAT and get into a better school. If you want to be in NY to network, go to a cheaper program than Columbia....

You're by definition one of us too... since you also look half wrong half right.

MBAs are made by Wharton blah blah, but it's now oversold everywhere. I get shit flyers for "global experience" with online classes from no-name schools. Real MBAs aren't laughed at, but mediocre MBAs dragged MBA's reputations overall. I hate that MBAs are marketed to be all equal.

I also wouldn't "arbitrage" with Harvard's certificates too far, because Harvard Extension alums are already slammed for it. anybody knows when harvard degrees are real. Trying to be stupid will only backfire with a simple interview question on it.
