Good question. I have to admit, although there are lots and lots of skills you can develop as an investment banker, there are not any that aren't exercised in other career paths. But, perhaps as a cluster, there are no other jobs that meet all and only these skills, and so this investment banking is unique.

These skills you will learn are:

Faster and more precise decision making,
Numerical ability,
Ability to work in a team,
Working well in high pressure situations,
Effective at meeting deadlines
A dedication and passion for the role.

Interesting what you said. I know general belief is that investment bankings requires high numerical skills, but what are examples of numerical ability skills that are needed?

I'd say good mental arithmetic is a must but it never hurts to have some statistical knowledge! Also, as a side note, always good to be well-versed on Excel and PowerPoint for such roles.

I would argue careers like software engineering meet all those criteria

All of those apply to any generic business roles, e.g. management consulting.

The only unique skill you'll develop coming out of IB is the stamina to live through 100-hour weeks without dying.

I would say: a sense of urgency. Ability to recognize that the timeliness of your work impacts the whole team supporting you. How not to be a bottleneck, no matter the cost to yourself and your work life balance...

Yeah that definitely doesn't apply to any other field...

One underrated skill IB teaches is how to properly format and layout an excel file. If I were to open any model from any deal a banker put together I'd expect it to be free of errors, laid out logically across sheets and tabs, and formatted nicely. My rule of thumb when creating something is to ask myself "if someone who had no knowledge of this deal opened this file and looked through it, could they generally understand how it works in x minutes?".

You'd be shocked to see how absolutely awful models and data are presented on the corporate side.

Uhhh based on the quality of financials we get from clients, I would not be surprised

The ability to stare at a computer monitor for extended hours.

"I can currently sit motionless in front of a screen for 28 hours, and I am improving daily."
