University of Rochester Simon MBA - opinions
Guys,
What do you think of Rochester;s Simon MBA? How is the school? I see my career in Finance and it seems like Rochester is a very reputable school in the industry. Any thoughts? How is the employment? Did anyone attend Simon's MBA?
I spoke to a Rochester rep at an MBA fair and they are not a feeder school for Wall Street. Mostly likely you'll end up in Rochester working for Kodak.
That would be terrible since I would feel totally comfortable shorting their stock. However, it is #13 in the U.S. and one of the top Finance programs in the world... Also, their recruiters list looks impressive. What are you basing your opinion on?
They do send kids to Wall Street but it is uncommon. I have heard of more grads going into non-IB corporate finance. Someone I went to school with for a year did the early entry program and does corp fin at Exxon Mobil. All the students I have talked to that completed the program are happy they went through it, but the paths they take are different from what everyone on this board is pursuing. I know this because they target my school for the early entry program.
Elijah, no one is going to be working at Kodak in 10 years. Everytime that stock goes up is another reason to short.
FxTrading,
Do you have any numbers on how many students went to work on Wall st.? I also think some banks like JPM hire at Rochester for their commercial banking arm... that may be it. Overall, in 10-30 MBA programs range, what are the feeder schools in your opinion?
Hey, just telling you what the rep from Simon told me - most graduates end up working in Rochester for a large company like Kodak or Xerox. It's not an opinion, that's what she said.
Actually I am surprised to hear it, given Rochester's good reputation in finance...
The website has a pdf file for the past two classes showing where the top employers are for interns and FT. I don't think there is much of a trend besides Xerox & Kodak. I remember seeing JPM and GS near the top of their employment survey when I had all the brochures from a meeting they conducted on campus. This year the top employer was a PE group based out in LA.
What I got from it is that you can set your own path as far as recruiting. I would look to contact alumni from here because I think they can give you a better answer than any of us.
They usually get mid and back office jobs at large banks - Treasury, Trading Operations, etc.
That said, their professors look absolutely top-notch, and the dean is clearly throwing everything he has at the school. They may move up closer to the Top 25 rather than Top 30, but really, employment is their biggest assignment.
if you want to do investment banking, do not go to Rochester.
uofr is a great school for everything except investment banking, unless it is a mo/bo position.
they usually get recruiting for everything but.
Not sure how else to reiterate what samiam said but that should end this discussion.

Hey,
What is the rep of this school/these programs? trying to get into IB/ER (leaning more towards ER).
Would prob get the msf post grad............
never heard of its program
considering you have a 1.1 gpa, idon't care
Simon does not have a great presence on the Street, and I'm fairly certain recruiting for IB is nearly non-existent there.
