Unpaid Internships - BB Background checks?

Hey everyone,

So recently, I landed a FT 2022 offer at a top BB (GS/MS/JPM) and will have to go through the background check probably in April or May. During my freshman and sophmore years, I did 3 UNPAID internships at very small, unknown boutiques. At one of the boutique firms I interned at, all the 2 analysts that managed me all left for other firms already.

The 2 places that I interned at during my junior year were both F500 paid internships, so I should be fine here.

Will the 3 unpaid internships be a problem during the background check at a BB? I head that BBs are usually very strict on background checks, so I'm worried this could get my offer rescinded. I absolutely 100% did those 3 internships, so I didn't lie about anything.

Thank you so much!

I would be surprised if they tried to grill you and say you didn't work the internships. If you have emails, documents or anything that proves you worked there during those timeframes I really wouldn't be worried.

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I do have emails and communication records with the analysts on the team but I'm not sure if those would be considered official proof of employment. I also previously had those 3 boutiques complete an employment confirmation form that was sent out by my university since my university requires students to complete X hours of professional experiences to graduate; however, I don't have that form since it was sent directly from my university to the employer.

I think you’re chilling. For my BB SA, I had an unpaid internship. Never came up and I don’t think they’d care. I’m pretty sure all BB’s outsource background check to 3rd party. I doubt they actually call the places. If anything, they want to confirm dates worked. And, I’d bet they care more about criminal history if anything. You never lied so you’re all good. If anyone asks, just say you were lucky and got it through networking.
