Wearing Suspenders in IBD..Yay or Nay?
I'm getting bored with the belt routine and thinking about switching it up.
What are you guys thoughts on junior bankers wearing suspenders. As a sidebar, I'm a top performer in my group and already get away with brown loafers and hermes ties.
Thanks!
Is it appropriate to wear red suspenders in Asset Management? (Originally Posted: 12/12/2012)
Should I where them with a pinstripe suit?
It would not be. Good way to weed out people I never wanna talk to.
Only with a contrast collar and slicked back hair.
Thoughts on Suspenders? (Originally Posted: 06/19/2014)
I know they're a bit outdated but I wouldn't mind if suspenders made a comeback. You can't tell me the work day wouldn't be at least a little more enjoyable if everyone was wearing them.
-1, decent trolling requires using the correct form of wear.

does anyone know where to get reasonably-priced suspenders? preferably thin ones?
You're wearing a jacket over it. Hide some J's using the suspenders while you're at it.
can you wear red suspenders to black tie? (Originally Posted: 07/22/2013)
i'm 18 and just thinking about wearing my red suspenders to my cousin's wedding

ive heard that the only way that theyre acceptable is if they have dollar signs on them
If you want to self-identify as a crayon-eating imbecile, go right ahead.
my friend's roommate wears suspenders to work - ALWAYS.
He's an analyst.
At a credit rating agency.
The 4th "largest" one.
J's??
Liar's poker reference?
suspenders are risky
Joints. I'd go with blunts though - it's a formal event and you want to stay classy
straight trollin
Not to divert from the subject, but a great bar called Suspenders in the Financial District, Manhattan unfortunately closed down last month.
Why anyone would wear suspenders (unless he is Gordon Gekko or his Lloydness himself) is beyond me.
Just Gordon Gekko it.
thats a troll if i've ever seen one
@"Aggmonkey" hey go to hell pal
Eat a bag of dicks ;)
the only people in finance I ever saw wearing those were senior mds working at buyside shops. not a single time ever did I see anybody rockin those at a bank
It's a wedding and you're 18... both reasons why you can get away with that shit.
Gotta be a MD or a BSD before you can do that kinda stuff
To paraphrase my business law professor.. 'You need to wear suspenders when you have a body shaped like mine, other wise you just wear a belt.' Meaning, his stomach stuck out above the waist/hipline so the belt had nothing to "grab" to hold the pants up. So he needed to wear suspenders or else his pants would constantly fall down.
Otherwise. Wear a belt. Do you think everyone should wear a bow tie every day to work too?
Yes.
I'll be honest. I have one in my closet that I had full intentions of wearing but still haven't figured out how to tie it even after watching and following how to's :(
People who wear bow-ties cant be trusted. No seriously that is a rule of mine.
With regards to the suspenders, the only person i know who wears suspenders is 85... ill leave it at that.
Don't forget the HUGE car cell phone
American Apparel has great ones. Also, i have found thicker ones at Filenes Basement
I think I might go bow tie before suspenders but to each is own, or how ever that saying goes. Great professor story though haha.
Don't forget the HUGE car cell phone
why risk it?
Only w/ 1980s style glasses
"Ummm yeah hi... I'm going to need you to come in on Saturday to work on those TPS reports".
I want to were a bolo tie, philip rivers style
Unfortunately, the reputation of suspenders/braces has been soiled a little by Gordon Gekko, but they are infinitely more comfortable than belts, and make trousers drape much better. They allow the pleats to open and the cuffs to sit neatly over the shoe. In every single way they're the better option, and most bespoke suits will be cut for suspenders, or at least have side adjusters, making a belt unnecessary. Of course they used to be seen as undergarments, meaning you should keep them hidden under your jacket as much as possible.
Suspenders are making a comeback, with sales rising steadily over the past few years. As long as you get some conservative navy or grey (not bright red) boxcloth suspenders, it shouldn't be an issue. Besides, who wants to speak to a person that's so narrow minded that he doesn't want to speak to you because of a small piece of fabric you wear? In lieu of suspenders you could go for trousers without belt loops and with just side adjusters, which is seen most often in London, but it won't be as comfortable as suspenders.
I bet 99% of the belt wearing trousers do not hang as cleanly without any sort of wrinkles or distortions as this: http://cdn.styleforum.net/a/a7/a7d52e04_tumblr_m0e7ypiBx71qa2j8co1_1280…
You would look like you are trying too hard to look like a banker
Sorry, Dick, but pleats are anything but a no-no, as it depends entirely on your body type. I expected you of all people to know better than that. Pleats will look best on more muscular people, who need the extra space for the quads. The reason pleats went out of fashion in the 90s is because they were on low waisted, wide fitting trousers, which looks terrible, while pleats are meant for high waisted, more tapered trousers.
The 2000s were a terrible period for menswear. Extremely short jackets that expose your seat, very high buttoning points and very low waisted flat front trousers, which causes a lot of shirt to be exposed in the triangle between the jacket and waist. On top of that most of it was also too tight and skinny, which gives most men a very feminine silhouette.
High waisted, single plaited trousers extend your legs, making you look much taller and leaner, while a jacket that's long enough to cover your seat and slightly fuller and with more drape in the chest makes you look much more muscular and in proportion. The buttoning point should also be at the natural waist, not your chest, in order to create a V-shape.
Again, pleats offer a lot of comfort, especially when sitting down. Any bespoke tailor worth his salt will recommend at least a single pleat if you have the body for it. Alongside suspenders, pleats are making a comeback. They are seen more and more on the streets of London, and a lot of RTW brands are introducing single pleated trousers in their collections. There is a lot of pushback against the trends of the 2000s, and don't be surprised when pleats are fashionable again in about 2-3 years.
They have been a part of traditional menswear for a long time now, and that is for a reason, as they will make some people look much better. For example, these trousers are pleated, high waisted, worn with suspenders, while the lapels are wider, the jacket is a bit fuller and the chest has some drape. I believe this suit was made by Steed: http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l18jh0I4XV1qb49x3o1_500.jpg
I'm copping some navy pleated tapered slacks with cuffs this weekend. ridin' dirty
OP, do you wear oliver peoples too?
Bow ties are adorable! On the right occasion, of course.
is it bad to wear oliver peoples?
I meant men wearing bow ties are adorable.
bolo ties are ferda
Our new analyst hire wears suspenders everyday. We rip on him pretty hard so I would avoid it unless you're a rain maker.
Only for middle age asian I bankers
Surely you have to be vry fat to pull the look off as wel right? A skinny person in suspenders looks like Charlie Chaplin, or some other such comedian
Suspenders just remind me of that old Office Space movie.
Everywhere like such as (and).
..So, if you could do that, that would be great...
Waistcoats > Jumpers/Jerseys and Cardigans
Looks like pretty much everyone on WSO seems to have some sort of deep-seated hatred for bow ties and suspenders. Did some guy with suspenders and a bow tie collectively pants the whole lots of you or something? What's going on here?
OP: Maybe you should consider moving to Hong Kong. Suspenders and bow ties are perfectly acceptable there. Hell, if a guy who's colloquially referred to as "Bow-Tie Tsang" can make it all the way to the top, it kinda tells you something, eh?
I will say that people in Hong Kong tend to be a little more... fashion-forward than those in most other major cities.
I understand the use of suspenders and kind of like them but I wouldn't recommend anyone wearing them in the US at least. Especially unless you're an older big dog. There's just a negative connotation to them now. They scream of Gordon Gekko.
hong kong could be the play, need a suspender-friendly atmosphere in my life
removed
Why do people on WSO asked opinion based questions and then get really pissed off when everyone gives there opinion
I have nothing against suspender's or bow-ties, eloquent older men pull them off. (see Tom Keene) Dumbass 21 year olds look like they fell out of a shitty movie set. Some things you gotta earn or look natural in.
same with cigars
I try to rock suspies every day, got a pair with dollar signs all over them for Fridays and a pair with bulls and bears that I usually wear when big macro data is coming out
At MD level you can do whatever the hell you want...until then we'll just have to stick to wearing them at home ;)
For short people, they can help to create a slight illusion of height (they aid the eye in moving vertically)
This isn't the 80's, pal.
If you're thinking of wearing suspenders you might as well just let your pants fall down.
If I wore suspenders I couldn't wear my "Lucky" belt buckle.
Do you mean like the one Dimon & Company wore on Fox?
You mean like the one I wore on Fox?
muahahaha m'fer :)
I wear them... they aren't a big deal if you don't think they are a big deal to wear

For whatever reason, the ladies love bowties. Spent a couple of hours learning how to tie one the night before a formal event.
