Well this just seems outrageous.
Good morning WSO,
During my morning "surf the web" ritual, I stumbled across this article on Yahoo:
http://news.yahoo.com/video/us-15749625/laser-hazards-for-pilots-landin…
To summarize briefly for those who don't have the time, the article is about a growing trend of people using high-powered lasers to point into cockpits of planes flying overhead. Doing so is a federal crime, and so the question I pose to all of you is this:
Do you think that this is being done with the intent of actually distracting pilots? Is there a new age of "terrorism" at hand? Or just some reckless kids playing around with overpriced toys that their parents spoiled them with?
this is old news, about 5 years old. i saw this segment of a bunch of teenagers pointing green lasers into the cockpits of planes. its actually a criminal offence. it's easy to track them down though and a bunch were charged. you can watch videos on liveleak.com
Yea except the incidents have increased in frequency by something like 2000% over the last 3 years...
It's kids playing around with lasers. When I was their age, kids were pointing lasers on certain areas of the character's bodies at movie theaters. Today, they are pointing them at airline pilots. I am sure than in 20 years, they will be pointing higher powered ones at the engines on Air Force One.
Dumb kids do dumb things. What else is new?
Or at professors' bodies during boring lectures. aka intermediate microeconomics.
They make lasers that can be bought for less than $200, can be seen from 10 miles away, and can cut through paper at close range. High powered lasers serve no purpose for the general consumer and should not be sold to the public.
Can they melt through gold?
Class IV lasers shouldn't be marketed as toys, but there it is.
As long as Bluray players keep dropping in price though it becomes easier and easier to cobble together these from scratch so you can't really control it either.
What if someone pulls a "Tim Taylor" and juices one of these things up and hacks off the wing of a plane?
Hopefully the plane lands on their house, but chances are they won't care because the damage won't hardly reach their parent's basement...I mean "apartment". What a bunch of idiots.
Regards
