What Annoying Emails do you Get?
So I don't know about you guys, but at my office, people have the annoying habit of sending around news articles that they feel pertain to our group. Sometimes the articles actually manage to talk about what our group is doing, but most of the time our relation to the news comes in the form of a offhand quote buried amidst the rest of the article. To put it bluntly, it's completely irrelevant.
Sure, I understand the thought behind these emails, but to me it just seems that you have a burning desire to show your intellect in the workplace. Yes, I understand that you read the WSJ, we all do. If I wanted to read that article, I would have read it myself.
So I'll throw the question over to you guys. What is your least favorite email to receive?
Those sending these news articles around should certainly summarize the article and point out why it's relevant in the body of the email, but sending around pertinent news articles is something that is actually a good thing for junior employees to do. Senior bankers appreciate it (at least mine always did).
Agreed. Definitely gives you brownie points when you circulate to a group or send an individual senior banker. Especially good when you're a first year and don't know very much and can demonstrate that you are following the news and know what is worth sending around. As a junior junior banker, you don't add a ton of value, so it's worthwhile to get credit wherever you can.
100% agree with Sil. Not in banking now, but sending articles to my team gets me points. But I make sure to write a blurb on the reason I'm sending it, along with the full article. The fact is, some articles contain a very key element to your job, although the article is not indtended to talk about that topic. Being on top of things never stops. When you show you get it, especially outside of your normal functional expectations, people know that you can handle more. Plus, you're hired for a specific reason. You must meet that reason by going above expectations anyway. I definitely wouldn't compromise my integrity by spamming the team just because you want the points.
Why so serious
Agreed,
Idiots will attach a link and send it off, juniors looking for a better ranking will pull relevant bullet points and summarise why it's important. Also, check the time stamp on articles, you can still look like an idiot if you send articles from five hours ago, or yesterday.
"I know it's the fourth of july, but pls help put this deck together EOD - but have some fun later. thx"
.
This is classic
Might as well get drunk at work
From: Managing Director To: Director Buyers List
[Need a buyers list for a strategic stake in my golfing buddy's failing business, please have something thoughtful for Monday AM]
From: Director To: VP FW: Buyers List
Please take a first run at this.
From: VP To:You FW: Buyers List
Please deal with this.
Ouch. Sorry, buddy.
Widespread outage emails for services that are irrelevant to me and to end clients.
My associate was so idiot that he asked me (by email) to make screenshots of a website several times. All this while he was at his laptop looking at the same fckn page.
If it has the phrase "please advise" anywhere in the email, 9 out of 10 times it's going in the junk file. If you can't craft an email that as I'm reading it i can tell what your request is, you're the worst type of human.
"Per"...."Please advise. Thx!!!"
Dear God, throw in a two item list followed by etc. and you've summed up my least favorite MD. Just looking at this is making me sweat.
Being on the 'All' list in my office kinda sucks.
Had an older gentleman at the last firm that should've been retired 10 years ago. He replied all on every firm-wide e-mail. I always thought it was common sense that there was a "reply" button.
Pretty much every email from my boss, especially the ones that appear over the weekend or after 9PM at night.
One time I received an EMAIL that said "Congratulations, you have been ACCEPTED to STANFORD university." I thought it was LAME and STUPID, so I marked it as SPAM.
BO telling me that I'm not matched on something. Actually, an email from anyone in the BO sucks.
Don't be too harsh on BO.
