What are my chances? Be real with me
I interviewed with a hedge fund starting in April. Went through many rounds including a case study. 2 weeks ago I met the head of the firm and a bunch of other people. Head guy said to me "They must really like you because you are the first person I met." I called them last week because I had another offer and my contact at the firm said we can't give you an answer right now, process will take a few more weeks.
Basically it seems that they like me, but don't love me and clearly want to interview more candidates.
Any thoughts on this guys? Worth still thinking about or should I completely move on?
I was expecting a firm yes or no, the "can't tell you right now" really through me off.
Let me know.
Thanks.
assuming that your current offer is exploding soon and you like the offer/firm/position, i would assume that you did not get the HF job. given the response, the odds are against you that you'll get hired by them. based on my experiences, it's a very bad sign if they say "can't give you an answer now" and then refuse to give you a timeframe (i.e. "we'll let you know by next Monday"), then I'd say move on. you don't need to burn any bridges, but you should also not give up anything else for this.
Yeah I agree. Why would do this? I would have expected them to say no outright instead of dragging me along.
There's incomplete information here: What was the other offer?
It's a lateral offer from an IB. Clearly second choice to this opportunity.
You still have a shot until you get a rejection letter. It sounds like they liked you, but you were the first candidate to make it through the rounds. With so many candidates out there you will likely have to wait until they finish up the rest of their interviews. If your contact says you have to wait a few weeks then you are likely still in the mix. I have heard of plenty of people getting rejection emails and call before they even get home from their final interviews. If you really want this job try to delay giving an answer to your current offer but make sure you find out if there is a expiration date on it. You don't want to come out of this empty handed.
small firms do this all the time. they can only give out one offer at a time, but they have to hire somebody, so they need to keep people as back-up options "just in case" they can't get the candidates they want. the issue here is that they gave you no time frame, which likely means: (i) they didn't really like you THAT much, and clearly are okay with losing out on you; (ii) they basically want to to keep interviewing people until they find someone they like better, as opposed to they have one other person scheduled to interview later this week and want to give them a chance before hiring you.
it's a terrible practice, but many small firms do this. i understand why they do it, but it's still a terrible reality. i would just politely tell them that you really liked the people you met and are still extremely interested in the position, but i wouldn't let the other offer explode just for the hope of landing this job.
Yeah kalice that makes sense. Why wouldn't they just reject me? I guess because they don't have to.
i would take the offer you have because the job market isn't good right now and you could always work at an hf.
