what does it mean to be a board member [linkedin] ??

Sometimes when I'm browsing people on linkedin (i.e. stalking) I see that they are board members of like 10+ companies. Generally these people are working in some sort of venture capital/private equity capacity and I would guestimate they are maybe early 30s...

Are these companies they are board members of their portcos/companies they have invested in ??

  • I think I definitely saw it with people in VC ... and pretty sure in PE as well but I may be mistaken

Sometimes people just forget to update their LinkedIns because they don’t use it often. Alternatively, the fund may have only sold a large portion of their investment and may retain some control

Do they receive the associated board related compensation? At my school various big shot professors may sit on publicly traded company boards and be paid 100k+ annually just for sitting on some meetings every year
