When to start the job search (in college)

Mods, please don't move this to the "job search" section as the answer to this will vary by industry a bit.

I'm going into my senior year of college and will be graduating Spring 2019. Should I start searching for positions during Fall semester? During Spring semester? Trying to see how much time I have to learn and network. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

It depends. Do you know what you want to do in real estate?

While most positions are just-in-time hires, there are a handful of firms that recruit in the fall. These are typically banks (Wells Fargo, BofA) and some equity shops (J.P. Morgan).

The job also begins with networking and internships before senior year. Real estate employers want to know that you are committed to the industry. That is demonstrated through internships and involvement with real estate clubs.

I'd like to start in investment sales as an analyst. I don't have any relevant internships so I'm planning on networking my way in. Unfortunately I didn't decide I wanted a career in CRE until a few months ago, so I have just begun my networking this past Summer and don't have the relevant internships.

This is a good part of why I want to start in this industry in investment sales. I've read on here that it's not too difficult to get into IS as an analyst, and seems like IS analysts are exposed to good starting experience and opportunities to network.

Brokerage is not tough to break into if you demonstrate enthusiasm. I recommend you start reaching out to brokers in your area now and start networking with them. Make a good impression and don't be surprised if you are offered an internship.

Also, knowing how to underwrite properties will be needed for investment sales. If you have not taken a real estate finance class yet, make sure you do so during your senior year.

Good luck!
