Which MSF to choose?Comparison between BC,GW,OSU.

Hi,in the upcoming weeks I will receive replies from the MSF programs of Boston College,George Washington and Ohio State's Fisher College (the new Finance program).
I am from Greece and I would like to find a job in trading or investment management in the US.
Can you plz give me your opinion on these programs and your preference???

Boston College would be the best for east coast work.

You're not studying at a top ten program, though, so you will need to focus on offering something specific that you can offer which other grads can't. Having a strong quantitative background or programming background would look good here. ANT is an expert on MSFs and will probably weigh in shortly.

If you have a 700 GMAT, you need to be aiming a little bit higher. If you can, it might be helpful to find something to do for one more year and try your hand at the University of Michigan (not to be confused with Michigan State) or UC Berkeley.

A 700 GMAT and foreign military experience, combined with a degree from BC aren't quite spectacular in and of themselves. You need to find a couple weird skills and maybe get some award. Maybe like being able to take an integral by parts in your head and also getting a research paper published in some major economics journal.

SalGr, you should apply to more programs since you have a GMAT of 700. A few suggestions would be Vanderbilt, Villanova, and maybe even Princeton or MIT if you have the background. So far, your best bet is BC though.

I would get internship experience. BC might be best for you since it will allow you to work and intern while you do the program. That way you will have experience by the time you graduate. Plenty of funds and smaller shops in Boston also.

Can you give me some info about internships in the USA?I am currently working as an intern in a Greek bank, usually day lasts till 7pm (more like a full-time job with no salary). If the situation is the same,it would be impossible to keep up with the projects+the internsip+the classes... I was more interested in the CFA,which I will definetely take if I do not follow your proposed path.

BC>OHIO>GW I was and I still am in your position. I applied to MIT, WUSTL, VANDERBILT and I got accepted by the last. I was thinking about BC, however I did not applied because I was accepted in VANDERBILT and I consider it much better. They also want significant work experience in order to have better chances for a job. I do not like GW. Very expensive and you need work exp again. I like OHIO but it is risky because it is brand new and we have no info.

IMHO, GW for a graduate degree would be a bit of a setback for someone with a 700 GMAT. Would recommend BC over it. But seriously, I recommend reapplying next year to UMich and Berkeley.

As I mentioned above, your proposal requires that I find a job till next year, which is impossible in Greece.I graduated from the top B-school of Greece + studied as a non-degree student at another college (with GPA 3.87 in 10 courses) and I was lucky to secure an internship til June...

Financial Times has only a listing (not ranking) of MSF programs. So I chose an objective criteria to rank them.As you can see in this chart, placement is excellent for GW's program (although I havent gotten a good feedback about it from WSO),next are BC and WUSTL with around 80%,and Vanderbilt an Villanova are wayyyy behind.. Any thoughts???

I am well aware of the FT listings. The info is not complete and is simply an informational listing. Anyone placing the GW MSF above BC, WUSTL, Vandy and Villanova is insane.

Flat out, insane.

I dont know why this adress does not direct you to the link,sry... I have not posted their ranking,as we both agree its just a listing.. The link is for a custom diagram regarding % of employment for these prorgams..I do not know if their data is accurate, but this is supposed to be something totaly objective. So what I see is: GW-97% WUSTL-83% BC-82% Venderbilt-73% Villanova-67%

GW is in its own category really. The average age is like 31 or something with an average of like 8 years of work experience. Its not really comparable to the others on your list in a lot of ways.

I agree that it is a different type of program (actual stats are 5 yrs avg WE and 29 avg age).So for a 23 year old with 9 months internship experience you wouldnt recommend it,even though it seems a pretty good program?

I hear Villantanova is strong.

It may be,but its not in my choices...I would appreciate it if you could give me some info on the 3 programs I have stated though.

Wish I could help, but I just don't know much about those programs.

I applied to 4 MSF programs but only got into GWU. This discussion is making me re think about joining the program at GWU. My primary reasons are that I am only 22 and have no real professional experience, also the sum of 60 k is a heavy burden on my family. Applying as international student I will not receive a work visa unless I get a job upon graduation from a company that sponsors me. My primary concern is that my degree may be rendered useless if I have to come back home upon graduation. Also I would like to know if it would be better if I completed two levels of the CFA myself.
