Which offer: Mid market PE or Infrastructure Fund or Asset Management
I am a senior at a non target school. I am very fortunate to receive three full time offers but I can’t decide which offer I should take. All three firms are in Boston.
1. A mid market private equity shop (~10B AUM)
2. An infrastructure private equity + project finance (~30B AUM)
3. A natural resources am desk - oil&gas + natural resources. (Firm AUM 300-800B)
I had two internships - one in am and one in pe (not the ones I received ft offers). No experience in infrastructure investing. I liked both internship so I really can’t decide based on my past experience. The infrastructure fund offer is also under consideration because i think it’s gaining more popularity?
The compensations are all very similar and I don’t really care about working hours(for now). I care more about exit opportunities.
Can someone help? Thanks!
Difficult to advise. They all seem good shops based in their market based on what you said. Generally, I would think that general PE gives you the more rounded experience and, therefore, keeps more doors open later on. However, if you have a strong interest for Infra, you may want to go down this route now and narrow your options within this segment.
Asset Management is probably the sector which will narrow your opportunities the most, as you generally do less strategic work when compared to the other options.
MM PE seems like the best option of the three. Especially if the fund has $10B AUM. The brand name will be good, you'll get exposed to a variety of things, and you'll keep options open.
Infra is interesting, but it's a little bit of a niche. If you love Infra, that would be the only reason to start here. I know a few guys in Infra who love it and have carved out a nice space for themselves and I know others who didn't do as well and are somewhat pigeon holed.
O&G AM sounds even more niche.
In the spirit of keeping options open, I'd go with PE.
