Why bother as an international?
Realistically, what are my chances of getting a decent summer analyst internship as an international at a non-target?

Non-target international student. Got 5 offers for 2021 SA. It's all about grinding man. Have leadership positions on campus, get solid internships, have a solid GPA, apply to diversity programs, and network the f*ck up. Best of luck man
Are you in undergraduate or in graduate master?
Undergraduate

Give it your best effort. Rooting for you.
You would be surprised how many international kids get offers, most of those who complain on Wso everyday about sponsorship weren’t gonna make it even if they were us citizens tbh
just converted an MS SA opportunity to full time this past summer. I go to a no-name school but networked my ass off + good gpa. you can do it!
Bruh u got 6 years on work visa to find 1 of 300mm Americans to date and then marry, not saying that’s the only reason you would want to get married, it’s just that you probably would’ve done it even if u weren’t thinking about marriage
I have a question for some of the others on this thread. If you broke in, but you're from a country with a lot of immigrants in America (India, China), how do you deal with the H1B system?
Interested in this as well
Correct me if I'm wrong, but per my understanding country doesn't matter for H1b - it really is just a lottery. the country caps come in with green cards
Yeah that might be right, I’m not sure. I was more speaking to all the things you can’t do- it’s hard to move jobs, no side hustles, you can’t vote, you have to go back home every couple years to renew. Obviously you get to be here, but I grew up here with my dad on an H1B for my entire childhood. Because of the green card backlog, I’ll probably also end up on an H1B and have to get in the back of the line unless I marry a citizen. I’m seriously considering going to the UK or Canada at this point.
Just curious to hear others perspectives on the whole situation.
Not hard at all. I interned at a BB this summer and returning full time next year. From a big 10 school, non-target. It's all in the grind man. Give in the 20-30 hours a week only into recruiting, 3-4 months an you'll lock up something.
It's harder to recruit as an international than as a US citizen/resident, but it's by no means impossible. As an international with a 2021 SA offer, the best advice I can give you is to hustle as hard as you can as a freshman and sophomore to get the junior internship you need. It's 2 years of extremely hard work, but after that everything gets easier
mostly true, but def don't expect things to get easier after that...
Anyone got information for internationals applying from a non-US school. Are our chances slim?
Very slim to nonexistent
What about for US dual citizens who go to a school abroad
It's slim but not impossible. I have a friend who got a BB in NYC this summer for 2021 (I was shocked too, lol). I'd say you should focus more on your region though, ie APAC, EMEA, if you come from these regions. It's easier - I'm doing it as well. But still. Anything is possible. Good luck.
Posters here are overly optimistic. My bank has stopped sponsoring. JPM has stopped sponsoring and a lot of others are following suite. Some firms literally don't give returns based on visa status so the people posting here must be very lucky/ lying cause internationals on the street (Undergrad post MBA is a nother story) are an increasingly non-existent site.
What I've noticed is that, as BBs have increasingly stopped sponsoring, MMs have become a lot more international friendly: it's a way for them to attract stronger candidates that they would normally get. So it's still possible to do well during recruiting as an international, although it's definitely harder than before and one may have to settle for a lower tier bank
I wouldn't say they're being overly optimistic... almost all the EBs sponsor for internationals when I went through recruiting and at my school I don't know of many international students being screwed over due to their visa status, it's more up to an individual to execute in interviews. TLDR it is harder for internationals but nowhere near impossible or extremely difficult, just means less opportunities you can apply to.
Echo what other people have said, personally know a decent amount of international SAs at Evercore, and given how small their class is id say people have a fair shot
I love the hustle of the above posters. However, given the current climate, I think it would be prudent to be realistic and consider other opportunities such as Big4 or industry given they are more likely to sponsor. Visa sponsors are going to be tough in this climate realistically so I'd spread a wider net and ride it out until the finance job market picks back up. If your goal is to stay in the US, I'd highly recommend looking for a job stateside as lateraling later on will be much easier. Good luck and I'm happy to help so feel free to PM
The only Big Four that still sponsors for consulting is EY. PwC only does for like 1 group and Deloitte Consulting just stopped. MBB still sponsors though from what I’ve seen. Industry has also never been internationals-friendly (the vast majority of F500s do not sponsor). So it’s pretty rough out there for internationals.
Had no idea. Man that's rough. Do large tech companies still sponsor for non-engineering roles?
I think it's pretty doable! At least based on personal experience. (Non-target intl, many people think my college is a womens' high school, and less people probably end up at BBs a year than there are fingers on my hands).
Most of the firms I've reached out to seem willing to sponsor and I've gotten an offer, though not in IB itself.
If you aren't sure that you want to do finance, MBB consulting firms are also quite willing(and global), though word on the street is that FT is getting crushed, but summers should be ok.
Presuming that you are a junior right now, maybe it's about how you craft your resume and cover letter?
Don't wanna act like some high and mighty intern pretending to be an MD, but would be happy to take a look.
