Why corporate finance over equity research?
I didn't get a final offer from my internship at GS.Now, I have two questions-
1) Is hiring freeze due to MiFid 2 regulation a good answer to why didn't I get a final offer?
2) Why join CF over equity research? Any thoughts apart from hours being less?
1) Nah you prob just said lame shit
2) Sexier hos yo. Water cooler walrus
** HELP - Corp Fin at JPM/GS vs ER at MM/Boutique ** (Originally Posted: 04/10/2012)
Sorry couldn't find another thread on this topic.
I'm graduating in May with an MBA from a top 10-15 business school in the US. Long term career goal: buy side research
I'm agonizing over whether to start a leadership rotational program in corporate finance at a top firm on the Street (think a middle office finance gig at GS/JPM). My other option is a sell side ER gig at a MM/boutique firm in either Philadelphia or New York. Compensation is very similar and irrelevant to me. Exit opps are top priority.
What would get me closer to my goal? I have IB type experience before b-school and nothing in way of research, so I'm concerned that if I go to a MM/boutique off the bat, that might not bode well for my future career prospects. Is my fear justified?
What would you do?
When do we get to the point where we are accepting offers because we like the job and not just for exit ops?
Middle office finance? What's that?
Many people frown on Corporate Finance or Corporate Treasury positions, but they work hand in hand with FO desks on a daily basis so the exit opportunities from Corporate Treasury to S&T are very high. There are a couple of MO jobs are great proving grounds for FO desks, corporate finance/treasury and market risk are the best.
But the position in question which I believe is the JPM finance leadership program (it's pretty obvious) is nothing but a support function. Best exit opp is you may move to investor relation, but in such a large firm there are many people ahead of you in queue. Take the research role if you want to do actual analytical work.
