MM HF Internship for Consulting

Am currently a student at a semi-target RG in the uk, studying ir with data science. Currently in second year. Am trying to set myself up with work experience for 1. my master (am looking at MiM at LSE, Cambridge etc.) and 2. eventually recruiting for MBB. I'm able to get an internship at a MM HF (10-15 billion AUM) through connections, its pretty Macro focused so I think I would be able to tie it in well with my ug in IR. It's pretty much my only option so I probably will do it, but am looking for insight on how this would look for masters, future relevant internships and MBB on my resume. Would this be seen as moot and just a result of connections given my non finance background or just as valid as for example a summer analyst at MM IB or PE etc. Also, how well could this set me up for name brand internships next year?

Being completely honest it won't help directly for MBB in the UK in a significant way. Having a non-finance background makes 0 difference (I have one and recruited for top pods/sellside finance), it's the fact that in MBB recruiting, they probably won't know what a T2 podshop is, especially HR.

You should still do it because its better than doing nothing, and on the off chance you want to do anything markets-focused in the future it will carry clout.

Appreciate the response, and yeah I thought as much. I'm honestly hoping it'll help me more in terms of applying to Masters, as I hear they really value work experience in conjunction with an at least decent academic background (high 2:1).

And I'm also not at all opposed to doing something market focused next year as a SA, if you could give me some insight in terms of whether this would give me any meaningful boost to my resume applying to namebrand Finance firms, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Will help with S&T, hedge funds and asset managers for sure. If it's a fund like Baly, Verition, ExodusPoint, Brevan Howard etc it's going to be well known in markets.

You'll have a resume boost but the caveat is they'll expect you to know more given these are good shops and hard to come by.

good to know and yes it is one of those funds. In terms of being expected to know more in interviews, i'd assume they'd be asking me rates, fx, commodities, equities etc. focused questions to gauge how much I really got out of the internship.

Honestly, I'm going into it with a somewhat small amount of existing knowledge on technical finance concepts (yield curves, pricing etc.), so I'll definitely push myself to learn all that this summer. How difficult do you think this would be without a conventional Econ background? last time I took an econ class was in my IB diploma.

I do have my IR background and I think that could potentially give me a good edge in terms of being able to give contexual insights into geopolitical events affecting macro. Am also personally a fast learner and I definitely can handle quantitative subjects although I prefer IR, if you get what I mean.

Thanks for your input btw, really helps me map out future plans.

if u got into one of those shops then why tf do u want consulting or MM IB lol.

u want to work 1.5-2x the hours, make 0.5x the money and align logos on a powerpoint?

unless u hate markets but then why would u apply to a hf

I didn't apply, the oppurtunity came thru a close connection. And btw your conceptions about pay are completely off, i would be making more or less the same el mbb as someone i know that's associate an hf. Im not looking to work at an mm ib, just throwing it in as a comparison, looking for a brand name shop for next summer. Long term im aiming for exit opps other than hfs or pe, think vc, startup

assuming this is for london

mbb base is 50k ish and i doubt bonus is more than 20k

any decent HF (esp the ones mentioned above) pay more than that in base alone
