TV series recommendations
Alright fellow monkeys - hit me with those saucy TV recommendations and i'll hit you all with my all time favourite (which I would assign a high probability that most of you haven't seen): The thick of it.
UK show filled with comedic genius and swearing to match the most profane pissed sailor - some serious golden nuggets to incorporate into your everyday lives. Malcom Tucker is also possibly my favourite character of any series. In this shitstorm of Brexit I like to imagine this show nicely replicates the incompetence of our current UK politicians.
(Some of the most popular shows i've seen: Billions, Peaky Blinders, GoT, Breaking bad, Westworld, Mad Men, True Detective S1, Band of Brothers).
The thick of it is great. I would recommend checking out Yes, Minister from the 80s.
Looks right up my street. Will definitely have a look.
The HBO Trifecta: The Wire, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire
Ah, forgot to mention Boardwalk Empire in my list - class series. The Wire and Sopranos have been in my 'to watch' for a while but never get round to them for one reason or another. Certainly intend to though, The Wire must be the series most recommended to me.
Just finished the first season of The Wire this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I've seen all of The Sopranos though and would recommend watching that before The Wire.
I'd throw in Battlestar Galactica and LOST
Breaking Bad is a great watch. Really found it's legs in season 3 where it went from good to one of the all-time greats.
Travelers and Ozark are solid Netflix dramas that don't require your complete attention to get into.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a guilty pleasure show. You'll laugh if can manage the suspension of disbelief.
Barry, coming back for the second season on HBO soon. A fun take on the "hitman" genre with Bill Hader taking on a role outside of his stoner-bro typecast.
Some heavy hitters here - heard a lot of good things about Ozark. Breaking Bad sits easily in my top 3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is probably the TV series I finished the quickest funnily enough, Andy Samberg is brilliant in it.
Just had a look at Barry, gone straight on my list. Love Bill Hader and a lot of HBO so a no brainer. Cheers!
Peep Show best UK cringe comedy since The Office
Black Mirror best WTF scifi/horror since Twilight Zone; some episodes are really at the top of their genre
The Expanse best science fiction show since Star Trek: TNG, deserves a way bigger fanbase
I struggled with the first few episodes of The Expanse and dropped it, does it get better?
Yes I actually also nearly gave up after the first two episodes. It felt too detective noiry and I was just kind of confused on the plot points and dizzy from the introduction to so many things. It gets much, much, much better IMO.
Some serious referrals here. Absolutely love the peep show, didn't list as wasn't certain on its popularity in the US. Same story with Black Mirror, 'White Bear' and 'White Christmas' notably for me is dystopian TV at its peak.
Will 100% check out The Expanse on the back of this, cheers!
Like Black Mirror, don't judge The Expanse solely by its first episode. Give it 4-5 episodes but in my opinion it gets better every season.
the only problem with the expanse is that it's kinda soap opera ey. I also fucking hate Holden lmao. Best sci fi it is tho
Amos is the GOAT though
You are in UK? I am super jealous that you will have the opportunity to watch the new season of Line of Duty, a show ten times better than any contemporary crime dramas excreted by US.
I am indeed. Crime drama is a genre i've not explored too much so will definitely take a look at Line of Duty. I have actually got a friend who swears by it.
Mr. Robot, Letterkenny
Mad Men. The writing and myriad plot lines is very intriguing.
Silicon Valley (first two seasons)
Community (first three seasons)
Bodyguard, new Netflix drama about British secret service who protect the Prime Minister, following one soldier in particular. Riveting! Only one season so far, unfortunately.
I'd echo Black Mirror as well, particularly the Metalhead episode.
The new Jack Ryan series on Amazon Prime is insanely good, too - also only one season.
Everyone’s recommending good stuff. Some shows that really stuck with me over the past few years are The Pacific, Entourage, Californication, The Affair, CNN does a multi seasons documentary series on each recent decade starting with The 60s, Game of Thrones, True Detective season 3 rivals season 1 in my opinion, Silicon Valley, Suits, The Young Pope, Documentary Now
A lot of great suggestions on here, so as not to echo anyone, I’ll provide a couple miniseries that I liked (Band of Brothers and The Pacific are my favorite though). -Godless -John Adams (if you enjoy historical genre) -The People v. O.J. Simpson
Second the people v OJ, great series
The Deuce on HBO
The Americans
My favorite shows of all time are GoT, the Americans, Breaking bad, and Westworld (Season 1)
Succession.
Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch
I enjoy watching the House of Commons debate. Absolutely hilarious ORDER I say ORDER!!!!!
The Office.
Atlanta with Donald Glover
The Wire Brotherhood Sleeper Cell (1st Season Especially) Friday Night Lights Battlestar Galactica Peep Show Succession (Same writer as Peep Show so you can enjoy that cringey humor mixed in with the douchery of NYC high society) IT Crowd Toast of London The Deuce
I really enjoyed Sleeper Cell! Always wished that Oded Fehr had gotten more steady work beyond Sleeper Cell and Covert Affairs. And the character "Ilijah" rapping Tribe Called Quest's "Left My Wallet in El Segundo" was one of the highlights of the first season.
Some of my faves: Black Mirror, GoT, Luther, Bosch, Justified, Longmire. Alpha House, Peaky Blinders, Mad Men, The Americans, Sons of Anarchy, Ozark, Burn Notice, Man in the High Castle [I've only seen the first season so far], Shameless and The Kominsky Method.
Yeah I think Brotherhood and Sleeper Cell are two Showtime series' that get no love.
That is like 15 years of television so you could have you hands full. All of the above are a grind too, so would recommend bingeing(sp?) cuz so much going on.
Lately I’ve watched the new Narcos season which I think is great, awesome like pseudo drama that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Also took in Umbrella Academy too which I thought was good and was very surprised. Awesome soundtrack.
Ballers, House of Cards (does netflix count?), Entourage, Boardwalk Empire and The Wire
Billions Suits Generation Kill (Oldie but dope as fuck) Californication (same as above) Russian Doll Luther Sex Education House of Lies (oldie...)
Billions Suits Generation Kill (Oldie but dope as fuck) Californication (same as above) Russian Doll Luther Sex Education House of Lies (oldie...) Friday Night Lights (oldie...) Entourage (oldie...)
Black Monday is a new one that recently started with Don Cheadle about 1980s stock brokers and it is pretty good!
