are ppl fake in the corporate world just as they are on LinkedIn
I'm a first year econ student who is relatively new to the whole finance world. Obviously I was advised to get LinkedIn and initially I found it extremely exciting as I could read abt my peers, research job opportunities and follow interesting ppl in the industry and companies. However I'm really sceptical abt it now Cus all I see ppl do is suck up and polish their profiles by posting thousands of online course certifications with massive captions and loads of hashtags. I see loads of fake comments like "that's interesting"; "feeling motivated now" when I know the person personally and doesn't actually mean it. Feels like I'm using Instagram with kids posting "woke up like this" selfies.
Makes me wonder if this culture is very prominent even in the job space. Does fake enthusiasm and sucking up take you far in the real corporate world?
Ps. I don't have a problem with ppl doing online courses (personally done a few myself) but I feel posting what an "elating exp it was" just makes it seem like a facade. It anyway appears on your profile for the employer to see.
Yes you're pretty spot on there. The people on LinkedIn who post the most about their achievements, or write huge descriptive paragraphs on their profile that no one will read, are generally not the ones with the most impressive achievements.
The profiles I come across that are truly impressive generally don't have much detail, since they don't need to brag or sell themselves.
As for the real world, unfortunately yes there's always an aspect of politics in just about any organisation. Purely 'fake enthusiasm and sucking up' wouldn't be the right way to go about it, but if you're thinking strategically in terms of your long term success in your career, you do need to have a sense of how to get on the good side of the right people, which does require some sucking up but in a way that's not totally transparent and fake. Be helpful and try to become the guy your boss knows he can rely on to add value, just don't take it too far and be annoying.
I can only assume the MS came from someone with an excessive word count on their linkedin profile lol
The entry level job commitment posts acting like they're a ESPN top 100 4 star recruit are more of an epidemic than Covid at this point. Scrolling Linkedin is now more comedy than anything else, the complete lack of self awareness on that app is astounding.
William Anderson 5 star recruit, #1 in 2020 ESPN 100 rankings for biggest hardo and first draft pick in Todd Mcshay's IB mock draft Big fuhnance guy 3rd generation analyst, his father played MD at GS before suffering a multi million divorce circa 2012 Height - 5'10 Weight - 175 lbs NYU Stern class of '22 4.0 GPA, 35 ACT, 1597 SAT President of the Finance society, PM of IAG and devote follower of fin meme accounts Interests include hating non targets, squash, lacrosse and sailing
The people that are loudest on LinkedIn are usually the quietest when it comes to business.
Don't forget the random posts by people who say they have the Holy Grail to life and everyone posting "Interested" or their email address. You do realize that guy just wants your email address to put you on a listerv to sell you a Ponzi scheme, right?
This. No posting should be a litmus test for the level of skepticism you need to be an investor.
One of my favorites is when people post their morning routines, apparently success is waking up at 4am lol.
Too much listening to Jocko Willink's podcast lol

I have a co-worker (not direct but in the same floor as me) who literally has a printed coursera certificate tacked on to her wall around her desk.
