Pretty simple question; which of Consulting or Banking would be viewed more highly to get into a top MBA? Heard Harvard and other MBAs were cutting admissions to applicants from financial firms recently so wondering if they have a preference?

I can't speak from direct
I can't speak from direct experience, but from my friends and other people I've talked to, it seems that it's what you do at these firms. They're more interested in what personal experiences you can bring to the classroom, rather than just a name of a firm. Just my $0.02
Consulting, there's no
Consulting, there's no question that MBB outperforms BB getting into H/W/S
Edit: Of course, as mentioned above, you can't be a total screwup at MBB and expect to get in over a rockstar at a BB bank, but given the same level of performance and rankings then MBB wins.
From what I've observed,
From what I've observed, McKinsey has unbelievable Business School placement. Guaranteed M-7 (+ Tuck and Fuqua).

I don't know a single mckinsey person who did not get into a top 5 b-school. My best friend did mckinsey, and he's now at kellogg, and he actually had the worst placement amongst his analyst class. Everyone else got into at least one of HSW.

Do you know if he bombed the GMAT or something?

Oh no. He got a 770, good grades from a top undergrad engineering program, did corporate strategy for a major company after mckinsey, 2 startups focusing on alternative energy, travelled to around 50 countries, just finished his first novel.
But he's indian-american, so he got fucked over by the liberals on adcom. He was bitter as fuck at first, but he loves kellogg now.

He didn't get fucked over by a liberal adcom. I'm a conservative and even I would like to go to a business school with a diverse class. If that means I have it harder in admissions (I personally had stats for HYP, but going to Columbia), so be it. Diversity makes the experience of uni and specifically b-school better.

Wow, if all that is true that really blows.

There are people who actually buy into this adcom drivel?

Lol. Seedy is just a college kid, so he still buys the PC drivel that ivy league schools force on their students.
My friend at kellogg thinks most of the URM's and girls in his class are a joke. They would say stupid shit in class and just aren't that impressive in any form or fashion. They got in because adcom wants a "diverse" class.
But don't you guys reckon
But don't you guys reckon that going down the consulting route limits your path to HF/PE?

Your friend's "impressiveness" and his classmates lack thereof is defined by what exactly...?

Brady, who is more worthy of an M-7 MBA, you or those URMs and girls?

Back to the original topic:
It's a tradeoff. MBB far outperforms BB IB (ceteris paribus) for top b-school placements, but obviously BB IB is the training ground for the buyside. Which is more important to you?
Mind you, in a recession, they all suffer.
Pro for BB IBD = twice the
Pro for BB IBD = twice the salary of MBB and no bullshit travel.
Pro for MBB = more interesting work, better B-school placement, and wider range of exit ops.
