Interview
The interviews were a series of phone screenings, a modeling test and several 1-on-1 in-person interviews with VPs through MDs at the firm. The first round of interviews were via phone and in-person in NYC (which included the modeling test) and the final round was a super-day at HIG's HQ in Miami. Each 1-on-1 interview lasted from 30-60 minutes and topics covered included technical knowledge, deal experience, qualitative interview questions and case studies. There was a strong emphasis on technical knowledge and case studies (ability to evaluate the merits of a company and potential deal). The modeling test was a 3-statement model and LBO in 2 hours. The case study was an in-person 1-on-1 where I had to ask questions to learn more about the company, form an investment thesis, do a paper LBO and present my opinion of the deal.
Interview Questions
The most difficult was a case study in which I wasn't provided any material. It was a 1-on-1 interview and I had to ask questions of the interviewer to learn about the company, it's financials, deal terms, etc.

Interview
First round was 1 on 1 with a principal. It was a mix of past deal questions, why H.I.G., and a paper LBO. The paper LBO started qualitatively, as though it was a consulting case interview, where the interviewee had to ask the right questions to get more data. The case then shifted to the paper LBO. At the end of the paper LBO math, there was a discussion of the business itself, what diligence questions you would ask, and what the biggest risks are associated with the business. The next round was a super day with principals and MDs. Each interview was 30-45 minutes. These were a mix of behavioral and technical. The technical was primarily case-driven. Some paper LBOs, some qualitative cases focused on business risks and what diligence questions you would ask.

Interview
The interview felt pretty standard and everyone was really nice and supportive during the process. Had a really great time meeting the team. Skills & fit questions seemed to be somewhat interwoven, which made conversations feel really natural. They seemed more interested in understanding how you think rather than you getting the right answer.
Interview Questions

Interview
Process: In-person 3 hour modeling test, 1x VP phone interview, 1x take-home qualitative case study, 5x Associate/VP/Principal video interviews, and 1x Managing Director video interview.

The first stage of the process was a traditional LBO modeling test followed by a phone interview about a month later. The phone interview was mostly transaction experience-related with a few behavioral questions. This was followed by a qualitative take-home case study, basically an in-depth company profile, investment thesis, and supporting rationale. Then a round of interviews (5 x 45 minutes) with the H.I.G. junior/mid-level team which covered the gambit of technical, behavioral, and transaction-related questions. The final round was with an MD and was mostly focused on transaction-related questions with a few behavioral questions mixed in.

The hardest part of the process (from a industry coverage banker perspective) was thinking through questions on hypothetical transactions and how to structure them.
Interview Questions
There were four paper LBO questions asked. The first was a vanilla paper LBO with all necessary information provided, the second was a "paper" LBO where some variables were omitted and you were expected to complete it in your head, the third was a paper LBO you started with no information and you had to ask for everything (there was also a qualitative element of thinking through the business), the final paper LBO was completing an illustrative LBO of one of my deals from my resume (not an LBO).

Most questions were the standard: Tell me about yourself. Why private equity? Why H.I.G.? Why middle-market private equity? What do you know about H.I.G.? What are your most/least favorite parts of investment banking? etc.
