AM Career in UK/Europe vs. US

Is an AM career (research/PM) as respected/rewarding/lucrative in the UK/Europe as it is in the US?

I get the impression that AM is a much more coveted career path in the US as it is on the other side of the pond. Curious to hear the thoughts of others.
