Goldman Sachs - GSAM - Operations

Hey,

I was wondering if you had any insight or advice into the GSAM's Operations Group.

Most of the info already in the forums seems outdated (18 months or longer) so I wanted to see if there has been any fresh ideas from new hires or more experienced professionals.

There are roles in NYC and Jersey City. Do you know if there is any difference in roles, culture, pay?

Also, curious to know everyone's thoughts on picking GSAM Operations role or working as an Consultant?

Thanks. Anything is appreciated.

What kind of consulting (MBB, Accenture, other)? What do you want to do eventually?

I think generally internal roles are tough places to start a career because you don't get a lot of the experience that b-school and subsequent careers are looking for (client facing, salesmanship, delivering on tight timelines, etc). Not to say wouldn't get any of that in Ops but its few and far between. The other shitty thing about Ops is you rarely have the opportunity to complete big, impactful projects that you can put on your resume or talk to interviewers about. Most of the job is repetitive and putting out small fires everyday.

If you want to do AM in may be a good way to get a foot in the door. For all their talk about mobility though, I don't think GS lives up to the hype, especially when it comes to BO -> FO transitions. I was once MO there and went to a mobility panel. Every panelist's mobility experience was geographic or working in other MO/BO functions.

King of Opz here.

I would certainly say that consulting would 1000% provide you with more skills and tangibles for future jobs and b-school. Ops provides you with nothing, except for the fact that you will be miserable everyday and feel like you are stuck in a hole you will never get out of. My $.02 , don't do Ops, don't even think about doing Ops.
