Help: Fund Valuation

Hey guys,

Gotta a fund manager competition, but since i am just a freshman now, dont know lots about fund (actually nothing).

the funds include all the major categories across the world--equity, fixed income, alternative investments, structured products and etc.

  1. Can anyone help me how to pick a fund? analyze their portfolios or the overal performance as a whole? Is there any fund anlyisis model that I can use to excel at the competion?

  2. how to manage the fund portfolio? low risk and high risk?

  3. Alternatively, are there any elementary books or websites that I can refer to? where can I find some professional fund research report by i-banks?

I know the questions are very basic, but i reall need them. Thank you!

  1. Here's something that can help you get a good groundwork: Understand the Modern Portfolio Theory
  2. This is a very stupid question. If anyone knew how to successfully do this, they'd be starting their own business.
  3. A good book would be "The Handbook of Alternative Investments". A book that an analyst in my internship recommended and very thorough, elementary explanations. Any professional research report would never be for free, buddy. And I would never look into the free ones offered online (they are most likely for marketing purposes).

Good luck.
