Have recently become interested in pursuing fixed-income asset management as a career, rather than PE/HFs (currently in a DCM role at a BB bank). I am interested in public and private credit strategies. Could anyone in a fixed income investing seat discuss their path to the role (CFA, banking, trading, etc.), what they found most accretive to getting to the seat, and what their day-to-day looks like? Any insight on the recruiting process? Any reason why choosing fixed income asset management was a better choice than going to a hedge fund? Any advice is helpful.

I would keep your eye out on alternative asset managers. KKR and Bain Capital recruit for FT credit analysts. DE Shaw and Ares takes credit interns for junior summer. Also realize that hedge funds are just a legal term for active investment vehicles. Asset managers (unless its passive investing like bank benchmarks or mutual funds) are just a bunch of hedge funds basically. If you're interested in credit, you should definitely be trying to get work experiences at any credit-focused place like hedge funds.
I think you're totally right. Do these funds typically recruit off-cycle? I have no interest in participating in the on-cycle madness
