Potential for HF from AM firm with irrelevant strategy?
Hi WSO, I recently received a FT offer from an AM in a MO role that uses a lot of python/C#/SQL to calculate target weights for portfolios (which then gets passed on to PMs/traders) along with some other generic MO/BO functions. So pretty much I won't have any experience with picking stocks or much exposure to working with technicals or anything else I learned from b-school. The firm in general is pretty data driven as opposed to markets driven and the strategy doesn't overlap with much of what most HFs do.
Ultimately I want to do something more FO related at a HF/PE/IB but at the same time I realize it's a first job and turning it down to look for something else at this point is a huge risk. I'm from a target school but my GPA is pretty shit (3.3 business/3.4 comp sci). Could someone more knowledgeable explain the process (if there is one) to break into one of those industries from MO in AM? Also the firm isn't in NY so networking might be difficult. Thanks!
