PubFin pivot to Asset Management (next steps)

Hello all, new forum member here.

I currently work at a middle market investment bank in public finance (3 years experience) but my long term goal would be working in asset management (fixed income / muni bond fund). I’m weighing my options and am leaning toward beginning the CFA exams rather than obtaining an MBA. Is there anyone else who has made a similar transition who can speak to the best means of making this transition?

I would like to stay in my current role for a couple years longer to gain experience (my original firm didn’t have great training so I joined a different one in the same role). I don’t have a strong technical background so I figure the CFA would help get my general finance education up to speed.
