First, dont let other people set your limitations. There is no formula for recruitment at Blackstone, etc. A quick linkedin search will show there are plenty of people, for example, who are current employees Blackstone and formerly went to Penn State.
In fact, that would be a good place to start networking...
But I dont see any benefit of accepting the "norm" placed on a certain candidate profile.
