Should I mention that the company I am applying to is in trouble?

Hey everyone!

I am writing a cover letter and the company I am applying to is in some trouble. They just had some serious losses and fired a lot of people (lets assume I might have a shot there anyway)

In my cover letter, should I mention that the company is going through rough waters? My idea was to write something like :

"I am confident that company X will overcome the present challenges and will prosper in the long-run"

I think it would show that I am aware of the company issues, I am concerned with the company's future (I care), I show confidence in the management's ability to turn things around.

Do you think that this could be seen as "negative talk"? Like I am applying there and I have to be all positive and stuff and I am mentioning this issue?

It just seems strange to me to simply ignore these events in my application. It is well known that they are going through tough times, so ignoring it could be seen as I am not paying attention to their issues or trying to downplay the situation or simply writing a generic letter by just changing the company name.

Anyways, what are your opinions on this?

Thank you!

Jumping off this, any thoughts on when interviewing with a boutique investment bank for an internship, they haven't had any deals yet this year although they've done great deals in the past, should I bring that up in the questions for them section and ask if anything is in the pipeline?
