Skill Issue?

Is a pre-requisite for asset management and investment management, especially in credit research to be a genius? The backgrounds of analysts and associates seem to be incredibly quant-focused, with a lot of them practically living and breathing books and the news. I feel more than outclassed questioning whether I'm doing enough to try and keep up.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Analytical Skills:

    • It's crucial to have strong analytical skills, but you don't need to be a genius. The ability to think, debate, and communicate analytically is key.
    • For liberal arts majors, demonstrating the ability to master technical skills (like Excel or part of the CFA) can be beneficial.
  2. Backgrounds and Experience:

    • Many analysts and associates come from quant-focused backgrounds, but this isn't a strict requirement. Diverse educational backgrounds can also be valuable.
    • Experience in research roles can be more meaningful and provide better interactions with Portfolio Managers (PMs).
  3. Passion and Commitment:

    • Passion for investments and investment strategies is essential. If you're genuinely interested in the field, this will drive you to keep up with the necessary reading and learning.
    • Demonstrating a clear passion for investing is crucial, especially when breaking into asset management out of undergrad.
  4. Practical Steps:

    • Learning Excel and other technical skills can help signal your capability.
    • Consider self-funding part of the CFA to show your commitment and technical proficiency.
    • Networking and getting to know the team you want to work for can also be a strategic move.
  5. Career Path:

    • Starting your career as a researcher can be advantageous. It allows you to build a solid foundation and meaningful work experience.
    • Client-facing roles often require more experience and can involve a lot of preparatory work like PowerPoints and RFPs.

In summary, while having a quant-focused background can be beneficial, it's not the only path to success in asset management and investment management. Demonstrating analytical skills, technical proficiency, and a genuine passion for the field are equally important.
