Student trying to scope out potential future in AM

I'm an incoming freshman at a semi-target uni in the south, with plans to break into asset management. I'm currently going through a finance technicals bootcamp, working towards my BMC certification, hoping to land a spring equity research internship, and want to know my plan of action (given my age of 18). I'm asking, what steps should I take to ensure I set myself up for success in the industry? Is AM really a dying field, and should I pivot to WM? Should I start looking at level 1 prep? What would you recommend to make me more knowledgeable about AM and determine if I should pursue my CFA? I could be wrong and maybe it's not reccomended to go AM in general anymore, in which, what would be a good alternative? I want to start laying my foundation now. Thank you, everyone, for the help in advance. I'm excited to learn.

To set yourself up for success in Asset Management (AM) and evaluate whether it's the right path for you, here’s a structured plan based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Build a Strong Foundation Early

  • Continue with your finance technicals bootcamp: This is a great start. Mastering technicals will give you an edge in interviews and internships.
  • Complete your BMC certification: Bloomberg Market Concepts is a solid credential to showcase your interest in finance and markets.
  • Pursue internships: Landing a spring equity research internship is a fantastic move. It will give you exposure to the analytical side of AM and help you decide if this field excites you.

2. Develop Relevant Skills

  • Excel and Financial Modeling: These are critical in AM. Consider enrolling in WSO’s Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp (next session: Sep 23-24).
  • Market Knowledge: Start reading 10-Ks, earnings reports, and following market trends. This will help you ramp up on names and understand how AM professionals think.
  • Networking: Begin building relationships with alumni and professionals in AM. Attend events, reach out on LinkedIn, and leverage your university’s career center.

3. Evaluate the AM Industry

  • Is AM a dying field?: While automation and AI are reshaping entry-level roles, AM is not “dying.” Instead, it’s evolving. Long-only research roles may face challenges, but areas like alternative investments, ESG, and private markets are growing.
  • AM vs. WM: Wealth Management (WM) focuses more on client relationships and financial planning, while AM is more analytical and market-driven. If you enjoy macro finance and human psychology, WM could be a better fit. However, if you’re passionate about markets and investments, stick with AM.

4. CFA and Level 1 Prep

  • CFA Consideration: The CFA is highly respected in AM, but it’s a long-term commitment. At 18, focus on internships and foundational skills first. You can revisit CFA Level 1 prep in your junior or senior year if you’re still committed to AM.

5. Explore Alternatives

  • If you decide AM isn’t for you, consider:
    • Private Equity (PE): A natural pivot for those with strong analytical skills.
    • Hedge Funds (HF): For those interested in more dynamic, high-risk strategies.
    • Consulting: If you enjoy problem-solving and strategy.
    • Wealth Management (WM): If you prefer client-facing roles.

6. Next Steps

  • Short-Term: Focus on excelling in your bootcamp, securing internships, and networking.
  • Mid-Term: Take part in WSO’s virtual bootcamps and explore AM-related roles like equity research, credit analysis, or portfolio management.
  • Long-Term: Reassess your interest in AM after gaining some experience. If it aligns with your goals, consider pursuing the CFA and targeting top firms like BlackRock, Fidelity, or Wellington.

By laying this foundation, you’ll not only gain clarity about AM but also position yourself for success in any finance-related career. Keep learning, stay curious, and don’t hesitate to pivot if your interests evolve!
