West Coast Asset Management Firms

In this forum, whenever someone talk about asset management they refer to firms such as T Rowe Price, Fidelity, Wellington, Capital Group etc. I never heard any reference to west coast firms except PIMCO. I know American Century Investments is one such firm. I was wondering how is this firm different from other firms generally mentioned on this forum. Do they follow typical long short strategy?
