11 days to prep for McKinsey Interview

So I just got invited to interview for McKinsey’s summer business analyst position. I honestly didn’t even expect to get an interview (I’m from a nontarget and don’t have that impressive of a resume), and I was expecting interviews to be a lot later. That being said, I am hardly prepared. I have done some casing previously but haven’t in months. What should I focus on with limited time so I can nail this interview?

With just 11 days to prepare for your McKinsey interview, you need to focus on high-impact preparation strategies. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can maximize your time:

1. Prioritize Case Interview Mastery

  • Perfect Practice: Don’t just do random cases. Practice each case perfectly by focusing on the key dimensions McKinsey interviewers grade: logical thinking, math ability, insightfulness, communication, and owning the case. Use a grading rubric to assess your performance and aim for "great" scores instead of "good."
  • Face-to-Face Practice: Train with someone else, preferably someone who has gone through real interviews. Avoid relying solely on prep books.
  • Stress Testing: Practice under pressure by simulating real interview conditions. Have a partner act distracted, ask tough follow-ups, or refuse to answer questions. This will prepare you for unexpected challenges during the interview.

2. Behavioral Interview Prep

  • McKinsey’s PEI (Personal Experience Interview): This is critical. Spend time crafting stories that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Results) to structure your answers.
  • Avoid Generic Stories: Choose unique examples that stand out. Avoid overused scenarios like group projects at university.
  • Practice Delivery: Spend time rehearsing your stories to ensure they are sharp and concise. Aim for authenticity, not memorization, to avoid sounding rehearsed.

3. Focus on Weak Areas

  • Identify your weaknesses (e.g., quantitative skills, structuring, or communication) and dedicate extra time to improving them. Practicing unusual or challenging cases can help address these gaps.

4. Leverage Networking Insights

  • If you have access to McKinsey consultants or alumni, reach out to them for advice. This can help you better understand the firm’s culture and expectations, which will strengthen your “fit” answers.

5. Time Management

  • Daily Schedule: Allocate time each day for both case and behavioral prep. For example:
    • 3 hours for case practice (1-2 cases per day with feedback).
    • 1-2 hours for behavioral prep (story crafting and delivery).
    • 30 minutes for mental math drills and frameworks review.
  • Rest and Recharge: Don’t burn out. Take breaks and ensure you’re well-rested before the interview.

6. Final Week Strategy

  • In the last few days, focus on polishing your strongest cases and behavioral stories. Simulate full mock interviews to build confidence and refine your timing.

Remember, McKinsey interviews are highly competitive, but with focused and disciplined preparation, you can significantly improve your chances. Good luck!

11 days is tough but doable. I'd follow this plan:

  • First two days: Crafting Cases 7 day course - teaches you all the basics of casing and what they're looking for, and the drills are very good (it doesn't actually take a week, doable in a couple days)
  • Next 7 days: Practice cases with other people. Preferrably current MBB consultants. Otherwise use platforms like CaseCoach (also beneficial to case other people). Note down the feedback you get, especially the areas you need to improve on, and actively try and address this the next time you case.
  • Last 2 days: Prep PEI questions and also do drills to iron out weaknesses in cases. Also worth potentially paying for a mock case with a coach (think PrepLounge and CaseCoach have good ones)

Definitely make sure you don't neglect the PEI - probably equal in importance as the case interview is
