Applying for Consulting Internships with low GPA

Hey Guys,

I am a grad student at NYU (not the business school) I want to apply for a Business Consulting Internship over the summer. Sadly, I have a GPA of 3.33 and i feel like that doesn't cut it specially for firms like Deloitte and PwC. I know for sure that I can raise my GPA to at least 3.5 in my current semester. How do I know this? I kinda got screwed over last semester because of this one professor, which I know will not happen again.

My question is- Can I put a 3.5 on my resume because I am certain I will achieve it this semester (CGPA) before my internship starts (over the summer). Please let me know what you guys think. I need all the help I can get.

Thanks!

Putting a 3.5 would be considered lying. It is up to you whether you should do this. From my experience, PwC and Deloitte asks for your transcript when you submit your OCR application (I don't go to NYU for the record) before you even get a first round interview. Also, when you apply online, I think they will ask for your exact GPA and you will have to round down to select GPA cutoffs from a drop-down menu. So, a 3.33 becomes a 3.3. However, a 3.33 is completely fine to get an internship with Deloitte and PwC in their consulting practice. You will probably not get into strategy consulting but getting into technology consulting should be very possible (management and risk consulting might be tougher but still very possible). My GPA was exactly the same as yours when applied (from a much lower-tier state school) and I still got an internship with them.

I know of someone who got interviews at PwC, Deloitte, and bain with a 3.2 gpa from UCLA. Unfortunately, he did not get pass the first round on all interviews. Seems like he was just filler for hr. He told me, the interviews were pretty informal and didn't last the scheduled 30 minutes. It was like they only chose him to fill up space.

It is not about the title that you have, it is about how much money that you have.

one thing i'm curious about, is what do consulting recruiters look for in terms of relevant background experience when selecting people for first round interviews? i just accepted a job at a BB, but throughout the recruiting process i probably applied to 10 or so consulting firms and didn't get any interviews. most of my previous experience was in finance, but i've been wondering how some people seem to swing full time finance and consulting recruiting at the same time

Remember, once you're inside you're on your own. Oh, you mean I can't count on you? No. Good!

Agreed with what matayo said. Idk how much knowledge matayo has in recruiting for consulting, but having been through the process, I can give you some specific advice. The biggest thing is that the GPA "requirements" of 3.5+ are in large part suggestions for where the students should be but at least one if not a few of the firms mentioned have internal rules that require a 3.2 to get the job. You may get away with not having your GPA on resume but when they run background checks and see that you have a below a 3.2, they could/will rescind the offer. PM for more advice and details.

What kind of school are you attending and are you looking for an internship or FT?

Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in the first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.
