Applying for MBB as a Recent Grad

Hi I recently graduated from a target school and accepted my return offer to work in private credit. Definitely enjoyed the job last summer but after some self reflection, consulting is more aligned with what I’d like to do long term. So I was wondering what the recruiting process would be like? Or if anyone has any advice as to how possible this would be and how to approach networking? Thank you!

Well if you're post undergrad in the U.S, you're too late for MBB already as the deadlines have already past and interviews have happened. However, you might no longer qualify as campus hire as you have already graduated. Might need to check with recruiters as you're not going to make it as an experienced hire with basically no work experience.

If you want to pivot down the line, work at whatever top company you can find for a few years and go to a top MBA (M7 preferred) and recruit from there

You missed your window. And there’s no market for laterals right now (firms trying to get leaner, not bigger)

Your next on-ramp is b school.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for applying to MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) as a recent graduate:

Recruiting Process:

  1. Application Timeline:

    • Start Early: Begin networking and preparing your application materials well in advance. Consulting firms often have specific recruiting cycles, so it's crucial to be aware of deadlines.
    • Resume and Cover Letter: Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills and experiences. Emphasize any consulting-related internships, leadership roles, and analytical skills.
  2. Networking:

    • Leverage Alumni Networks: Reach out to alumni from your school who are currently working at MBB firms. They can provide valuable insights and potentially refer you.
    • Coffee Chats: Schedule informal meetings with consultants at various levels (analysts, associates, VPs, directors). These conversations can help you understand the firm culture and the specifics of the role.
    • Follow-Up: After initial conversations, ask if they can introduce you to others within the firm, especially those in groups or roles you are particularly interested in.
  3. Interview Preparation:

    • Case Prep: Start preparing for case interviews early. Resources like "Case in Point" and "Case Interview Secrets" are highly recommended.
    • Mock Interviews: Practice with peers or mentors who have experience with consulting interviews. This will help you get comfortable with the format and improve your problem-solving skills.

Networking Tips:

  • Target Specific Groups: Focus on networking with people from groups or teams you are interested in. This can help you get more relevant advice and potentially stronger referrals.
  • Be Persistent: Networking can be time-consuming, but it's essential. Reach out to multiple people and follow up if you don't get a response initially.
  • Be Genuine: Show genuine interest in the person you are speaking with and their experiences. This can help build a stronger connection.

Additional Advice:

  • Resume Drops: Always apply through the firm's website and attach your resume. If possible, get someone within the firm to push your resume internally.
  • Info Sessions: Attend any information sessions or recruiting events hosted by the firms. These can be good opportunities to meet recruiters and consultants.

By following these steps and leveraging your network effectively, you can increase your chances of successfully transitioning into a consulting role at an MBB firm. Good luck!
