Breaking into MBB/Big 4/T2 after undergrad

Hi, I'm an engineering student graduating in spring 2027 from a T20 target (think Duke, Michigan, UT Austin, UVA).

I haven't secured an internship yet for this summer (2026), but I did a project management internship in summer 2025. I was wondering how difficult it is to recruit full-time for consulting. Is it worth taking my time to network, practice casing, and apply to full-time roles with 2027 start dates, or is it too late/challenging? Would really appreciate any insight.

Breaking into MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), Big 4, or Tier 2 consulting firms after undergrad is definitely possible, but it requires a strategic approach, especially if you haven't secured a consulting internship for the summer before your senior year. Here's some advice based on your situation:

1. Networking is Key

  • Start Networking Now: It's not too late to network. Consulting firms value connections, and networking can help you get your foot in the door. Reach out to alumni from your school who work at consulting firms, attend firm events, and leverage LinkedIn to connect with consultants.
  • Focus on Informational Interviews: When networking, aim to learn about the firm, its culture, and the role. Ask for advice on how to position yourself as a strong candidate.
  • Leverage Career Services: Your school's career services office can be a great resource for connecting with recruiters and alumni.

2. Practice Case Interviews

  • Start Practicing Early: Case interviews are a critical part of the consulting recruitment process. Use resources like Case in Point and Case Interview Secrets to build your skills.
  • Join a Case Prep Group: Many schools have consulting clubs or case prep groups. Join one to practice with peers and get feedback.
  • Focus on Both Case and Behavioral Interviews: Don't neglect the behavioral portion of the interview. Be prepared to articulate your story, why consulting, and why the specific firm.

3. Leverage Your Engineering Background

  • Highlight Problem-Solving Skills: As an engineering student, you likely have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Emphasize these in your resume and interviews.
  • Showcase Leadership and Teamwork: Consulting firms value leadership and teamwork. Highlight any relevant experiences from your project management internship or extracurricular activities.

4. Apply Strategically

  • Target a Range of Firms: While MBB is highly competitive, don't overlook Big 4 and Tier 2 firms. They offer excellent opportunities and can be a stepping stone to MBB later in your career.
  • Tailor Your Applications: Customize your resume and cover letter for each firm. Highlight experiences that align with the firm's values and focus areas.

5. Consider a Plan B

  • If you don't secure a consulting role immediately after undergrad, consider roles that can position you for consulting later, such as strategy roles in industry, finance, or tech. You can also pursue an MBA down the line to re-enter consulting recruiting.

6. Timeline

  • Recruiting for Full-Time Roles: Consulting firms typically recruit for full-time roles in the fall of your senior year. Start preparing now so you're ready when applications open.
  • Summer 2026 Internship: If possible, secure an internship in a related field (e.g., strategy, finance, or operations) for summer 2026. This will strengthen your resume and make you a more competitive candidate.

Final Thoughts

It's not too late to break into consulting, but it will require dedication and effort. Focus on networking, case prep, and tailoring your applications. Even if you don't land an MBB role right away, there are many paths to a successful consulting career. Good luck!

there is a big difference in the level of target-ness for the t20s you mentioned

but yes, keep applying for the summer and keep preparing for cases if you want to do consulting

MBB's treat UVA/UofM as a low-target/semi-target with much more spots than UT (where McCombs is the main source) and is mainly only a target school for Texas offices.

that being said, it really depends what the rest of your profile looks like. how's your gpa? do you have decent extracurriculars? any unpaid internships? client projects through school?

i'd still apply - doesn't hurt to shoot your shot. and you can have a higher chance at T2s.

What would you say is the difference -- Duke as a national target vs the other 3 "public Ivies" are semi-targets or regional targets?
