I had a question about firms seeing transcripts after you've been given an interview but before you've reached the offer stage.
How closely do firms look at your transcript? I am an engineering major, and I'm purposely saving a lot of the hardest classes for senior year when my GPA doesn't matter as much. Will consulting firms examine my transcript closely enough to realize this?
Hell no.
I'd agree with mark klein. If something on your transcript caught the eye of the company, they'd either not pick you for an interview in the first place or have brought it up in a screening round.

Do they look just to see if you have the target GPA's or do they go through your course grades thoroughly? i.e. I have a 3.6 major (unrounded-engineering school) & 3.5 (rounded) cumulative. I got a couple crap grades in my tougher intro engineering classes (two D's & a C- to be exact) but retook them and got A's in all three which really brought up my major GPA. Although it corrected my GPA my school still keeps the original marks on your transcripts. I think a smaller MM shop probably wouldn't care, but are those classes going to get me dinged from a BB recruiter when I apply this fall?

Depends on whether the recruiters ask for your transcript before interviews start.
During my interview season, they did not ask for a transcript until offers were handed out in order to confirm that you did not lie about your GPA.
Some do ask for it beforehand however.
I don't think it's going to get you dinged but from experience people at least ask about the class if it's an obvious D on your transcript even if it's retaken, if you toss them a copy of your transcript during a conversation that is.

I ask because I received a B (average is a C-) in Financial Accounting, and I wanted to know how much this would hurt my chances. I still have a relatively high GPA (3.70). I go to a non-target, state school.
Most can't be bothered to look at the transcript except for verification purposes.

Yes, I'm not very familiar of what goes on "behind the scenes", if you will.
Goldman Sachs called my 2nd grade teacher to ask if I liked the jungle gym or the big slide better. They later cross examine you during the 3rd round interview to make sure the stories match up.

Do you have empirical evidence that the average is indeed C-? if it's C or C+, then that's a completely different story. If you're only ball parking C-, you better explain that B in your cover letter and in your 'Tell me about yourself'.
True story. BBs do their due diligence, so don't bullshit a bullshitter.
They most likely would not look at transcripts until after job is offered and accepted. Your one B in accounting with a 3.7 GPA (assuming that GPA is reflected on your transcript) will not make a difference.

The only time I showed my transcript was my first day of FT training and I had a strong GPA clocking in at .4 less than the firm minimum (I work at a BB). Luckily I never got asked my GPA during recruiting for the SA spot and I didn't have it on my resume so I guess I got lucky.

I know that some investment banks (MS, JP, maybe more) require you to submit an unofficial transcript as part of the application. How closely is a transcript scrutinized in determining whether somebody gets a first-round interview?
Apparently my interviewers from JPM didn't pay much attention to my transcript prior to OCR. Maybe HR screened it before forwarding my resume to bankers.
I've never looked at one of those even if our resume packs came with them
This is interesting to me. Why not look at it to determine if the applicant has a high GPA due to taking easy soan classes or whatever, instead of high level quant courses? Otherwise I might just need to take some more intro courses.

For example if you have a 3.85 GPA but in your freshman year you got a C, a W (withdraw), and a D in a no-credit class. Do employers actually care about this stuff even if you have a decent GPA?
The 3.85 gpa will far outweigh the mess from freshman year. They'll look at your transcript primarily to see how you did in the classes that are most relevant (math, finance, econ). The W and D in particular will stand out, but if you've done well in the relevant classes, the freshman debacle shouldn't keep you from getting serious consideration for an interview.
You can include a note in your application explaining what happened freshman year, and you should expect to have to explain what happened in any interviews.

So if the OP screwed up the finance and math classes, maybe the problems would be scrutinized more.

When looking at prospective IBD internship applicants, do recruiters/first-year analysts look at your transcript? Or do they just get your GPA from your resume?
If they do look at the transcript, do they look at it in detail? Do they look at which courses you took and when you took them, or do they give a cursory look over what kind of grades you got?
EDIT: So, the upshot is that one or two bad grades (I have a 3.68 overall, but one C and one C+, the former a core course, the latter a major course), won't affect my likelihood of being given an interview or offer?
Only HR looks at your transcript. Just to verify that your GPA is what you said it was. Although I'm not in HR so someone verify

Agreed. Some ask for a unofficial transcript, others just take your GPA on your resume as the gospel truth. All of the companies I interned with never bothered to verify my GPA.
was only asked for it AFTER receiving my offer (whether for full-time/internship). More of a verification check for your GPA listed.

Hi all,
I'm looking at the job postings on my school's career website, and for 95% of the IBD positions all they want is a resume drop. Maybe half require a cover letter. One wants a transcript.
My question is -- will they look very closely at the transcript? My cumulative GPA passable for screening (3.7), but if you look closely at my transcript, my Econ major GPA is lower, with a pretty bad grade in a Calc class. My understanding was that all the resumes get compiled into a resume book which then gets passed to the analysts who are alum, who then pick 24-30 to interview.
In this case, will the analysts have access to the transcripts as well?? Or is this just an HR screening thing to make sure people aren't lying about their cumulative GPA (hopefully implying that they wont take the time to look too deeply and figure out my major GPA by looking at my coursework).
Any replies from people who have been on the other end would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

GPA is what matters. You are going to have people with 4.0's in soft majors from top schools. Do you think their lack of econ or calc is going to hurt them?
