Coffee chatting as an incoming freshman?

Before you throw ms at me me I only considered this after reading this sentence from a business club recruitment guide made by a finance club at my school: "To put the competition of recruitment into perspective, some freshmen students begin coffee chatting the summer before they arrive at Cornell." I could not come up with this 4th circle of hell idea myself.

Anyway as it seems to be acceptable in finance I was wondering if this would be considered too sweaty and cringe for consulting/give the club a bad impression of me, especially since I feel consulting is perceived to be a bit more laidback? This is a pretty neurotic post tbf but I'm the first in my family to go to a school with resources like this or even know what consulting is and I want to make the most of it.

i don't think it's that crazy since club recruitment starts pretty soon after you get to campus - it's definitely not a requirement but it'll likely boost ur chances as long as you're respectful and ask good questions on the call. every campus is a little different club culture wise so talking to current students is a reasonable thing to do and any finance/consulting club would understand

Ohh okay thank you for clarifying. I wasn’t sure since I saw someone else ask the same question and got clowned for it lmao.

Additionally, do you have any advice on what constitutes as a “good” question to ask in a club coffee chat? I mostly see advice on here for actual recruitment but nothing for clubs. My impression of the process of coming up with good questions is linkedin stalking the person and then asking pointed questions about their role/experiences and if possible letting them know any similarities or shared interests we have, but I’m not sure what I’d do for club-specific questions--especially since most of them are somewhat similar. Or again when it gets to that point, interview questions related to “why x club” since again they’re all kind of the same.

The way I see it for now is just thinking about what I would want to be asked if I was in their shoes, but I’m an incoming freshman so the shoes really don’t fit that well lol.
