College Junior - what should I do?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently a junior at a non-target university in Italy 3.6/4.0 GPA
Next year I’ll be starting an MSc in Management at a semi-target university in the UK.
My goal is to break into consulting (MBB would be the dream, but realistically I’d be more than happy starting at a Tier 2/boutique firm/big4.
At the moment my experience is limited, I have done consulting internships at small / medium firms (one in Italy one in London) not big brand names, but a good amount of exposure to client work and strategy projects, also joined a Junior Enterprise in where I took on client projects and I have done some business dev work + some Volunteering experience.

What can I do during these years and during my MSc to improve my profile, what should I work on, how do I learn and grow to have a chance at boutiques/tier2 firms or even MBB.

Thank you in advance!

To position yourself for consulting roles, including MBB, Tier 2, or boutique firms, here’s a roadmap based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Leverage Your MSc Program

  • Networking: Use your MSc program to connect with alumni and professors who have ties to consulting firms. Attend firm presentations, case competitions, and networking events.
  • Targeted Applications: Many semi-target schools have pipelines to consulting firms. Identify which firms recruit from your MSc program and tailor your applications accordingly.

2. Strengthen Your Resume

  • Highlight Impact: Emphasize the results and impact of your internships and Junior Enterprise projects. For example, quantify achievements like revenue growth, cost savings, or client satisfaction improvements.
  • Academic Excellence: Maintain a strong GPA in your MSc program. If your GMAT score is strong (above 670), include it on your resume.
  • Extracurriculars: Continue participating in leadership roles or impactful activities, as these demonstrate initiative and teamwork.

3. Develop Core Consulting Skills

  • Case Interview Prep: Start practicing case interviews early. Use resources like case books, online platforms, or even join consulting prep groups. Focus on structuring problems, performing mental math, and delivering clear recommendations.
  • Problem-Solving Frameworks: Familiarize yourself with frameworks commonly used in consulting, such as market entry, profitability, and M&A.
  • Communication Skills: Work on presenting ideas concisely and confidently, as this is critical in consulting.

4. Expand Your Network

  • Cold Outreach: Reach out to consultants on LinkedIn, especially those from your MSc program or with similar backgrounds. Request informational interviews to learn about their experiences and advice.
  • Firm Events: Attend as many firm-sponsored events as possible. These interactions are often assessed and can help you stand out during recruiting.

5. Gain Additional Experience

  • Internships: Aim for another internship during your MSc, ideally at a more recognizable firm or in a relevant role (e.g., strategy, operations, or finance).
  • Freelance Projects: Consider taking on freelance consulting projects to further build your portfolio and demonstrate initiative.
  • Certifications: If time permits, pursue certifications in areas like data analysis (e.g., Tableau, SQL) or project management (e.g., PMP), which can add value to your profile.

6. Prepare for Recruiting

  • Resume and Cover Letter: Get feedback from consultants or career services to ensure your application materials are polished and tailored.
  • Mock Interviews: Practice with peers or mentors who have consulting experience. Focus on both behavioral and case interviews.
  • Firm-Specific Research: Understand the unique culture and focus areas of each firm you’re applying to. Tailor your responses to align with their values and priorities.

7. Consider Long-Term Strategy

  • If MBB doesn’t work out immediately, start at a Tier 2, boutique, or Big 4 firm. These roles can provide valuable experience and serve as a stepping stone to MBB later.
  • Build a strong track record of delivering results and developing client relationships, as this will make you a more competitive candidate for future opportunities.

By focusing on these areas, you’ll significantly improve your chances of breaking into consulting. Good luck, and remember, persistence and preparation are key!
