I know that banks have been deferring their new hires with partial pay. Has there been similar instances with consulting companies as well?

I know one MBA who has had their consulting start date pushed back 6 months.
My office (boutique MC) reneged 3 offers and deferred another's start date by 6 months as well.
I've heard about this at a lot of places - including M/B/B. Nothing as drastic as 6 months, but a lot of November/January start dates.
McKinsey deferred the MIT '09 class to Jan start
Bain start dates for class of '09 hires are September, October and January. Everyone ranked their dates and got assigned based on how early they accepted their offer.
This effectively meant that interns who got offers at the end of the summer and accepted without looking elsewhere started earliest.
These dates compare to July, August or September for class of '08 hires.
For people with January start dates, Bain pays a $10K stipend to those who do nonprofit work or $5K to go abroad and do a foreign language program.
Wtf. You only get paid if you do nonprofit or teach a language? Sure it's going to look great for B school, but I would rather have some seed capital to start a business...That credit suisse one year deferral sounds like gold..
