Consulting in NYC (Travel?)

Hey guys!

I have a question to those of you, who have some experience working as a consultant in NYC. First of all, I am German, pursuing a Master's in Management atm and ever since I have come back from my semester abroad at Cornell recently, I want to move to the US. IF I somehow manage to be able to move to the US, it would be a dream come true to live and work in NYC and therefore I was thinking a lot about this lately.

The point is, I like consulting, but I am not quite sure yet which function or industry I should specialize in. Now, I had a finance focus during my business administration undergrad and since I don't want to travel much, I was thinking, maybe I could limit my travel if I would specialize in Financial Services and work in NYC? Would that limit my travel or would I still be sent elsewhere all the time? Which companies have a more regional focus? I heard Bain is the best when it comes to travel, but frankly I don't know if I have a shot there, (at least right now) but I think I could land an offer at a Big 4 (maybe try to get a job at Bain later, with some work experience?)

I just wanted to hear you opinions, does working in Financial Services in NYC sound like a good plan for someone who does not want to travel a lot?

Besides, what skills does a consultant need to have, if he wants to work primarily within the financial sector? Financial Modeling? CFA? etc.
