Consulting prep

Hello everyone,

I am starting my consulting prep journey today. I have started reading "Case on Point" and "Mckinsey way". I wanted to know how I should start my consulting preparation. I know there are a bunch of online websites that help you in case interviews etc. But i am confused if i should apply for these websites or not.

Websites include: 1) igotanoffer 2) preplounge 3) casecoach 4) myconsultingoffer

If any of you have registered for the above websites, please do let me know your reviews and if i should go for it. Alternatively, if there is any other way to start prep, i would love to know that too.

Thankyou! 🙂

Hey haziqiqbal, I received offers from MBBs and T2s without paying for any of those websites. I did, however, read through all of their free materials just to learn about the industry, firms, interviews, etc. At the end of the day, there's 2 parts to the interview: case and behavioral. The best (and only) way to get good at both is to practice, there's no substitute. I think I did 2-3 cases per week almost every week for about 6 months, I'd sometimes do ~10 in a week leading up to an interview.

I'd also tell you, especially since you're starting, don't sleep on the behaviorals. If you make it to the interviews, they generally know you're pretty smart and the case is just there to make sure you clear that problem-solving bar. After that, it's about do they like you, which behaviorals are a big part of (depending on the firm). Happy to answer  questions, and best of luck!

Hello,

Thank you so much for the reply and guidance. Can you tell me how you started your preparation and which materials you used to make sure you know all the frameworks etc?

Thankyou

I'll second @DrApeman's points, 100% agree. Frameworks are like the primary colors for a painter, you have to know what they are and how to use them. But in a real case (or painting), you're mixing and matching your colors to create custom frameworks for every situation. Partners can tell if you're just regurgitating something you found in a book.

As for where to find them, hard to remember where specifically I did. I think Case In Point has some in there. A lot of BSchools' case books (Kellogg, Wharton, HBS) have them. Honestly just google "consulting frameworks" or "profitability framework"  and all the big consulting websites you listed probably have them on there. Should definitely be available for free on the internet.

Hope that helps

As someone working towards making a lateral move away from banking in to consulting - wanted to hear your opinion on the value of studying sell-side diligence we had an MBB do on a deal I am on (full market study + market sizing model) versus traditional case prep? I aim to do both but curious for the purpose of interviewing if you think studying traditional materials would be a better use of time?

Hey there,

I’m travelling this weekend, without my laptop. But I’m posting here to remind me to post some material / old posts I made answering this.

In the meantime, regarding frameworks, while there are some that you should definitely know well (pricing, profit, M&A, etc.), most of the time it’s better to come up with your own idea of what is important for a given case.

Sometimes that means trimming an existing framework, other times it means mixing 2 of them, other times it’s completely unique. To get comfortable with that, I’d recommend doing the weird cases whenever possible.

EDIT: adding those links I mentioned below, they mostly refer to How To Prep

  • Link 1: how to case
  • Link 2: case tips (the link is to my comment, but I actually would direct you to the comment below by Parmesan123123, great tips there)
  • Link 3: prep timeline / plan (that was how I approached it)

Also, I did use CaseCoach, I liked it personally. I did pay for their case prep material, mostly cause it allowed me to prep with other candidates over the limit (I think you have 5 or 10 sessions for free). I also did use a coach on there. I found him helpful, and Im actually still in contact with him a year later, as a sort of informal mentor.
