DC Office? BCG/McKinsey?
What are the reputations of the DC offices for BCG and McKinsey? Are their reputations and cases good, considering the other more popular offices like NYC/SF/etc? Also, how do they compare against each other? If deciding between them, should it be based on cultural fit, or is McKinsey, for example, a lot more highly regarded/utilized in DC?
Try to get an offer of any MBB first before worrying about this
You don't know that I don't...but regardless, even if I didn't, consulting is very office-specific, so office rankings throughout the interview process are important. Glad you came here to post that, though.
OP - ignore this dumb and uncalled for comment. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to consider this before having an offer, for example when deciding what offices to preference, deciding what region to go to school in, or deciding where to invest networking efforts.
This is actually really shitty advice. If you want to work at a specific office, the time to worry about that is long before the offer stage. You submit your office preferences when you apply, and in most cases, to actually be considered for a particular office, you should probably network specifically with consultants in that office.
Don't see why you're throwing shade at a guy for being thoughtful and proactive about how to approach a major fucking life decision.
If it was a genuine question on office choice I wouldn't have given a shitty answer. Office choice is a major decision but shouldn't be driven by 'the prestige' of an office. Also, except for one, his questions are about evaluating the two against each other, not other geographies against each other. Come on, seriously? Look at his questions.

BCG DC has terrible quality of life relative to other BCG offices.
Thanks! Is this from personal experience or word-of-mouth?
My understanding is that the DC office for BCG is more heavily focused on energy work than any of their other offices. In case that's in your wheelhouse.
I've spoken to two different consultants at BCG (one in the DC office, and the other in New York) who both attested to it. The DC office's reputation for that sort of work seems pretty well known.
I just realized what the confusion was here, my initial post meant to say "more heavily focused on energy work than any of their other offices on the East Coast." That's where I was tailoring my own job search back when I was in college.
It's not as energy-focused as Houston, but energy is a focus of the DC office, especially compared to the rest of the Northeast system.
It's more about where partners/principals are located than where the clients actually are. Have friends in BCG Northeast, and can confirm what others said (that energy is a big focus of the office)
McKinsey has a global staffing model so the opportunities that you have in terms of staffing isn't really restricted to your office. Obviously, if you want to do government projects, then DC might make staffing for them a bit easier. I would recommend picking an office based on who you connected well with and where you want to spend your time when you're not staffed. There isn't really a difference in "prestige" for the different offices. It's way more hyped up on the candidate side than once you're actually working in the firm. I can't speak for Bain and BCG, but I heard office location might be more tied to project selection for them.
