Deciding Between Accenture MC or Deloitte FAS

Hi everyone,

I have an exploding deadline for tomorrow between two offers: Accenture's Management Consulting Development Program in Charlotte (trying to get to Chicago/NYC) and Deloitte's Advisory's Financial Analytics Services group for the Data Analytics in NY. The Data Analytics role is a consulting role that is specialized in using software like SQL to work with big data. There is still client interaction and the opportunity to look at different industries as well as travel.

My main concern right now is how it will affect my future prospects. My goal is to go to a top 10 business school and eventually do something related to management or a start up. A key point is that I am very unsure what my interests are. I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on which one will give me the best opportunities for business school? A concern that I have is that even though Deloitte is a great brand name, business schools may not recognize this specific group, whereas ACN's MCDP program is well established.

Both pay the same though cost of living is higher in NYC. What does everyone think?

I'd go with Accenture, it will give you a wide range of experience in different kind of Consulting work. Deloitte FAS offer seems to specific with the type of Consulting work you will be doing. An equivalent offer with DT would be in their S&O practice, FAS is a completely different group within the firm. Your base office won't matter; in consulting you are traveling 80-100% of the time Mon-Thurs. The only difference would be where you spend your weekends and resources. I am assuming industry as well.

Accenture's offer would be best given you are unsure about your interest, Accenture will provide enough variety to help to decide. FAS seems too focus on given description not so much MC work.

I would try to tell Accenture you have an offer with Deloitte FAS Consulting in NYC if they could consider placing you in NYC and give a reason why; maybe you have family in NYC or are original from there.

Best of luck!

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. I guess I'm just a little worried because I feel like I don't have any real skills and it seems that the FAS role will be a great opportunity to learn a lot. I'm also wondering if Deloitte FAS will make a better story for B-School because to me, it seems to be more unique. Thoughts?

Don't worry about skills, as a first year at Accenture you are not expected to know much. Just be a critical thinker, hard worker, team player and willing to learn and take initiative. They will give you training that will help with the on boarding process. Just know basic econ, buss and stats knowledge from uni and you should be fine going into Accenture.

I believe having experience in MC from Accenture would be a better case for b-school than DT FAS. While DT FAS may be different from your typical MC b-school candidate. Much of b-school is what can you contribute to that incoming class. You will learn much more at Accenture mainly because it's MC work.

For Accenture, will you be doing some work related to operations? Because for Deloitte, unless you are interested in mining data and passing it on to the managers who requested it, I would go with mgmt consulting. The firm I am at has a data analytics team, but I have only had minimal exposure with them. We would basically give them data and have them search for keywords and generate a report with the results.

I'd agree with the others here about Accenture. It's a more flexible role; the Bschools aren't going to make enough of a distinction between them to matter. Both are strong enough and recognizable enough. You're also spot on about the cost of living difference; why pay so much extra to rent a place you won't be living at most of the time? Save the money, especially if you are considering Bschool in a few years.
