Deciding Between Two Very Different Internship Offers for FT @MBB
Hello, I'm a junior with two internship offers:
1) Business Analyst Intern at Capital One (McClean HQ)
2) Simon-Kucher and Partners Summer Consulting Associate (Chicago Office)
Ideally, I'll be looking to leverage whatever role I choose in order to gain access to FT roles at MBB or a Tier 2 firm this time next year and eventually for MBA programs in a few years. I currently have a 3.7 GDP in Economics at a top 25 school; looking solely at the impact of these two different internships in terms of their exit opportunities and resume value. Essentially a less relevant role at a Forbes 100 firm vs. a more relevant role at a lesser-known and (probably?) less prestigious firm (also focused on pricing/strategy consulting). Looking to go into general management consulting.
Thanks for reading and in advance for any advice!
In short, pick the one with the bigger brand name first and then look into the actual work that you would be doing and if there is a way you can spin it for your consulting interview next year. Good luck!
Anyone in consulting (including the people who will be screening your resume) will definitely have heard of Simon Kucher. Purely in terms of resume value for mbb recruiting there's little to no difference between these opportunities. I would focus on some other factors. Where do you want to live for the summer, Chicago or Virginia? Where do you think you can learn more or which role do you find more interesting? Also think about which of these two places you would want to go full time if MBB recruiting doesn't work out.
