Deloitte Tech RFA vs. FTI Consulting Forensic and Litigation Internship

Hey guys,

I’m an incoming college junior who goes to a semi-target. I’ve gotten two early internship offers, and my plan is to recruit for top management and economic consulting firms my senior year. I can either pick from these two internships or forgo these opps to recruit at LEK and the Big 4 for internships. I’m looking at MBA programs or stem grad degrees like Penn’s Masters in Computer Info Technology to get into Data Science or PM; I might even want to do VC someday. I’m also interested in privacy/ cyber law, so hopefully my first job out of college can expose me to the area. A lot of this will just be jumbled thought-vomit, so I appreciate your patience and appreciate any insight I can get.

Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory Tech is cool, but it’s not consulting. Deloitte pays for grad school reimbursement, and I’m sure the experience will look good on my resume. The work will be mostly IT audit, which I’m not sure I’m stoked about. Never done this type of work, but some people tend to hate it. However, I’ve heard that you can get interesting projects if you network. They also pay for MBAs and STEM masters- I know a girl from my school going to INSEAD after taking on this role full-time.

FTI Consulting’s Forensic and Litigation Financial Services internship (yes, it’s a mouthful) also seems interesting. Deloitte is 10 mins from my house, but FTI is an hour away. I don’t think they pay for grad school reimbursement. However, the pay progression might be nicer. Finances really matter for me, and by the time I’m 30, I’d like to be making a salary of 200k+ because the Bay Area is expensive, and I’d like to live comfortably. Also, it seems like the role is more litigation-focused which would allow me to learn more about the law, but it would also silo me. The role largely focuses on understanding excel, data models, and being able to summarize these for PE firms and law firms. I’m not sure what the exits are, but they’re probably in compliance and grad school. Also, this obviously is a consulting internship instead of an advisory one. I don’t know how much that matters, though. Would it matter if I wanted to switch between consulting firms?

I’m hopping on many calls this week to get info on both, and I’d love to hear any input I can get. Apologies for any grammatical errors- trying to make this decision fast.

Thank you!

You should see if you can switch your FLC offer at FTI to an Econ Offer at FTI, interning at FTI if you have any questions but I do know that our econ segment is pretty good (at least as an internship)

I think at this point in your career Deloitte is the bigger name to have on your resume, but FTI work will likely be more fulfilling for you.

For what it's worth, FTI FLC is basically the leader in the field of litigation consulting. I also would not worry about getting pigeonholed this early in your career.

I may be speaking from a bias because I am actually exactly in your shoes (rising college junior at t20 uni) and just accepted an offer at FTI within the FLC segment. I chose it because it’s growing very fast and salary is generally pretty high straight out of undergrad (close to 90k starting). Career progression also seems very streamlined at FTI and I talked to many directors who are in their late 20s and making $200k+/yr.  Please feel free to PM me if you want to talk further as Id love to discuss more.
