Got a job. What's next? [Deloitte BTA]

Hello everybody!

I have been reading the Consulting Cabaret forum for quite a while now, but I think this is a good time to write a first post. I have recently accepted an offer from Deloitte for their Business Technology Analyst position and am seeking any advice you can have. Especially from those that are with Deloitte - what are the things that you know now that you wish you knew when you first started? How to build my network within the firm? How to get on the "cool" projects etc.

Also, would you say it is worth for a IT consultant to go do Bschool?

I will really appreciate any advice! Have a great day!

Just...attention to detail. I don't think any new hire to consulting has ever had the required attention to detail, especially under the time constraints you'll be experiencing.

Nothing else you do your first year will matter more than someone not having to constantly rewrite your work or hit "spell check" because you didn't.

On time + no stupid mistakes = excellent first year

This. Unless there is some crazy urgency (e.g., you're in the car on your way to present at clients, which will happen), your manager would rather see a clean document 30 minutes late than an on-time document riddled with stupid mistakes.

Also--let your manager know when you do the above (i.e., you're just putting the finishing touches on the document, and that you're giving it a once over).

Tyler's comments are spot on.

As for bschool, I've heard from the BTA's I know that Deloitte (at least federal side) discourages bschool and often doesn't promote it as an option. In addition, they are very selective on their tuition allowance for BTA's going back to school (again, just from what I've heard form current BTAs).
